Please bring your IDs!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
... when buying alcohol, cigarettes, and sometimes medicine. Even if you look over 40, there's a chance you'll get carded and it'll be much easier for the both of us. I can't bend the law for you.

Love,
anon who just wants to keep her job and freedom :(

Curious, why would you specifically card someone who clearly looks over 40, if the point is specifically keeping it away from minors? I can understand young-looking 20-something, but generally 40-year olds don't look 17.

The law (At least in my state) says if they can pass for fourty, you have to card them. I even had to sign a form that stated I would, or forfeit my job. (They send in fake customers to check on you, too, so it's best to just follow the rules)

A lot of places have policies like that. Partly to make it less likely for people to skate by without getting carded - but honestly, I think a lot of the reason is so that people don't have as much room to argue when they get carded, or at least so that there's a policy they can point to when the person cards them. I'm sure those arguments must get INCREDIBLY wearying.

That. I know some places even post a policy that they will card everyone, no excuses.

Some places also keep track of people who buy certain types medicines because they can be used to make meth. Especially if they're buying more than one bottle.

Well, at least where I live it's because it's the law that you have to card everyone [or at least policy-wise you have to] in order to keep track of how much of certain medicines someone is buying - and because let's face it, some people look a lot older than they are and other's look a lot younger*. So it's just best to card to be on the safe side.

*I know someone whose in their twenties and has actually had people seriously believe she's 12.

I'm not your friend, right? Cuz I'm 24 and I've had people ask which grade of junior high I'm in.

I understand this. I've had so many customers say "Do I look like I'm under 18?!" and I have to tell them that if they pass for 40, I still have to card them. Also, please understand you can't use temp IDs to buy things, and throwing a fit won't make me do it for you!

Worked at a place that sells cigarettes for a long time. Fucking this. Both the employer and the employee can really get in trouble for not carding.

Why is it that I am only ever carded when I've forgotten my wallet? Is there some sort of tell? Because when I have my ID I'm never asked, but when I don't, sure enough, CAN'T SELL YOUR 30-SOMETHING ASS BOOZE DARLING.

Is there like an ID-detecting radar behind the desk or something?

Perhaps you look fidgety/nervous? I know I get all weird when I realize I've forgotten my wallet, so maybe cashiers are just picking up on subtle cues without even realizing it. "Hey, this one looks shifty, I'll card them just in case."

That's probably it.

Oh well fuck 'em, they sell booze in vending machines here. Can't card that shit!
