I don't think pointing out that an evil person was human is necessarily defending them. For me, at least, it makes what they've done even more terrifying. Bear with me, I'm trying to sort my thoughts out, but: If you say someone who does evil things "isn't human", the implication is that it was their being non-human that caused them to be that way. A real human would never do anything evil. But the thing is, no matter how evil someone is, they still haven't stopped being a human. And that's the scary thing to me, and why I think it's kind of disingenuous to separate ourselves from evil people by denoting them as essentially a different species entirely, because any one of us might have the potential to turn out that way. Sorry, my words aren't coming out very well, but I hope some of what I was trying to say got across. (And I'm Jewish, if that's relevant at all.)

I'm not saying he wasn't born human. But to say he died human, and to even try to give him some sort of sympathetic slant is just disgusting in my opinion. He murdered and experimented on millions of people, and somehow I'm supposed to go "aw" that he held a little girl's hand? Really?

He did die as human. Being worthless and evil and deserving to die doesn't meant that you're an alien. I agree that the sympathetic stuff is shit and dumb and wrong and deeply off-putting, but he was a human being and the Nazis were human beings and that's one of the most important things - that human beings were capable of doing this, that they did do it, and that when we judge and condemn them, we judge and condemn them as human beings.

There really is no reason to try to paint a man who killed millions of innocent people in a sympathetic light. It's like those teenage girls who are saying that teenage piece of shit who bombed Boston is innocent "because he's so cute teehee!"

DA

I think the point above anon is making is that seeing him as human doesn't have to mean painting him in a sympathetic light? Honestly I think it's a cop-out when terrible deeds get written off as performed by 'monsters'. There are no 'monsters', all the evil done in the world is done by regular old humans. It makes it scarier, not less scary.

I think you're supposed to go "Oh, he held a little girl's hand; even a monster like Hitler isn't 100% vaudeville demon" compared to villain stereotypes who kick dogs, steal from charities, set out to destroy the world just because, and otherwise never do anything that could be remotely positive. Turns out bad people are people, too, and there are plenty of monsters who might, in other parts of their lives, seem even good. Recognizing that-- that even the Hitlers of the world aren't pure evil incarnate in every aspect of their lives-- isn't a defense or an excuse of them in any way whatsoever.

This and the comment above are exactly what I was trying to say, worded much better. Thank you both.
