I miss those semi-creepy, dead-silent evenings in the late summer and fall during the mid-1990s. The world was a little less well-lit then, a little more empty. The weather had 4 seasons rather than "summer" and "not summer" and everything got real quiet after the sun went down.

Actually, part of why I liked the old Millennium Halloween episode "The Curse of Frank Black" so much was because it encapsulated perfectly that weird sense of emptiness. I really miss that, particularly now that our weather here is so screwed up and everything's way more built up now.

I grew up really far into the country, so that was every evening for me! We still don't have streetlights or anything. And yeah, I have noticed the lack of seasons. OK went from Winter to Summer after like 2 weeks of not knowing which way it wanted to go.

Did you ever play Kentucky Route Zero? It did a lot to evoke that old feel for me. I think I might replay it if they ever release the 2nd episode anytime soon.

No I have not! I just googled it. It looks interesting, I will have to do more research about it. The wikipedia page is a bit sparse on non spoiler details.

It really is quite something -- atmosphere in spades with some genuinely great music. The demo is kind of an anti-demo in that it shows off the game's engine without actually being part of the main plot of the game, and is interesting in its own right.

I actually wrote up a review of the first episode a while back, lemme dig it up.

"I remember when I was growing up, Cincinnati was a lot quieter than it is now, and visiting my grandparents, on a street with no lights and the neighbors went to bed early, darkness seemed to swallow everything up, even sound. Kentucky Route Zero really evokes that feeling -- darkness falls quick in the opening minutes of Act I, and there's very little in the way of civilization. I'm no stranger to rural Kentucky and Ohio -- in the summer they're almost otherworldly, which is captured perfectly in this game, along with that eerie feeling of isolation where the whole world disappears.

The music is fantastic, being sort of a mix of ambient with a little bluegrass. I really like the art style, too -- it's similar to that strange, late-50s early-60s Americana style you sometimes saw in animation and advertisements from the period. And I'm a huge sucker for that stuff, which is why I loved the art direction of Fallout New Vegas so much because a lot of it edged away from the traditional 1950s style into early 60s.

I can't wait for episode 2."

I just listened to one of the songs from the game (The Stars Drop Away (Equus Oils)). It really is quite gorgeous music!

I just listened to that too! It's something else, isn't it? I could listen to it for hours.

OMG what was up with the Simpsons clip at the end? That was so weird. :P

Part of the running gag of that album -- every song had some clip from the Simpsons or whatever.

I hear you about the well-defined seasons! We used to have the rainiest summer and part of autumn, and a nicely chilly winter, and a warm and nice spring, but nope, must burn the nice forests that keep weather in balance to build houses, who cares about protected territories, blah blah blah.
