ಠ_ಠ This news does not please me. No thinning shirts until they get a stronger fabric damnit!

Anon butting in to say I just finished reading a (really poorly edited but still interesting) book called Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, by Elizabeth Cline, that goes into why well constructed, durable clothing is becoming so hard to find.

The end of the book, where the author mentions a couple of possible solutions to the whole 'my shirt just fell apart in the wash' thing, gets a bit preachy in the same way that 'the best way to counter industrial agriculture is by growing all your own food on your postage stamp balcony' does, but the author still lays out why outsourcing the entire industrialized world's textile and clothing industry is fucking the world over. (The world, rather than just the industrialized part of it, because textile manufacturing involves toxic shit and clothing manufacturing for cheap=sweatshops, and also other countries are picking up the taste for novelty in clothing.)

It boils down to that old saying about being able to make something cheap, fast, and well, and only being able to do two of those things at a go. There used to be two or four new seasons for clothing per year. Now many retailers put out entire new collections of clothing every couple of weeks, and sell it cheap, so that people will come back for more. New stuff every two weeks + low prices= shit quality. Also, polyester in fucking everything, because among other things, drought is killing off cotton crops.

Apparently, only twenty percent of clothing donated to charity shops is sellable to the public, and the rest is sold to recyclers, who sell it to people who make rags, carpeting, insulation, lots of industrial stuff--but in the last few years, it's such shit quality it's mostly worthless. Also, polyester=plastic=non-biodegradable and expensive to recycle. People have been encouraged to think of clothing as a disposable item rather than as something to be repaired or remade, and with quality so low to start with it kind of is.

Wow. Sorry for the essay. I just grew up buying everything but socks and underwear secondhand, and I hate that so much of what ends up in thrift stores these days is unsalvageable, shoddy, big-box-store crap.

I guess my only option anon is to learn how to make my own t-shirts. I have patched blue jeans before, but they were pretty crappy patches.
