I don't like the show either, but from the little I've seen of it, it's clear that at least some of the writers are themselves nerds.

Yeah, some of the writers are nerds, but the punchline is less of a nerdly joke and more of how silly and/or pathetic the guys are for being as into their nerdy hobbies as they are. They all have a couple of stand-by costumes? Cue the laugh track!

My old roommate loved this show, so I wound up watching a fair bit of it, couple of seasons worth at least.

Like they say, if you want actual nerd humor about nerd things from the point of view of nerds, watch Community.
