DA

Disagreeing here. Like with any disorder there are degrees of severity. Not everyone needs drugs, not everyone should be on drugs. There are a lot of different ways of coping.

There are degrees, yes. I don't feel that "This situation makes me uncomfortable, but I can easily get through it" should be considered a disorder, in the same vein as "I cannot leave my house at all today because I might not be able to avoid everyone."

ayrt Definitely. I think there is definitely a trend of people using anxiety to describe feeling uncomfortable, I just think it's wrong to say that if you can't function without medication then it's not real. That's a problem.

I say this as a person with a diagnosed Anxiety Disorder that has not ever been on medication for it. I've worked very hard to find ways of coping and tricks to get along. I know my limits and what I can handle each day and yeah, some days I still can't leave the house or I'll have to muddle through an anxiety attack. But I'm not medicated, I function (mostly), and I do have a disorder.

Obviously this is all just a discussion on the internet and in the scheme of things means nothing, it just bothers me to see people saying I don't /really/ have a disorder and basically dismissing all the hard work I put in. I'm probably overly sensitive about it. *shrug*

but again, you're ignoring the matter of degree

if I eat in public, I get sick to my stomach and throw up. even if I go home immediately after eating. I've tried therapy and some medications but it still happens. If I eat outside my home, I get violently ill. I don't know why. It makes my life harder but I've grown so accustomned to it that I don't really think of it as being severely impactful anymore. I just know if I get hungry enough to eat or if I feel like I'm pressured into a social situation where I feel compelled to eat, I'm going to get sick. The behavior doesn't become normal though, just because I've normalized it.
