I'm starting to come to the conclusion that....

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
...pretty much everything in life is subjective. Okay not everything, but most things. My whole life I've always felt like there was a 'right' personality to have and a 'right' way to live or life to have, and the older I get I'm starting to realize that that's...not really the case. No one knows everything, and so many things I've always thought of as absolutes are really no more than one person's opinion.

This is probably obvious to most people but the way I was raised it didn't seem all that obvious to me, and it's sort of mindblowing to realize it now. Pretty crazy.

I definitely agree with this. But I don't think that means that everything or anything is subjective; it just means that a lot of the time we don't have a very good idea of what right ACTUALLY is and it's a really easy pitfall to fall into to presume that whatever we happen to think is identical with the objective truth. The fact that all of us have pretty different ideas about what's right and wrong doesn't mean that there isn't any right out there; it just means we have to try harder to find it.

I don't think that's at all what they were trying to say though

It's a very freeing concept, isn't it? Not only do you get to make decisions based on your own unique situation, but you also are allowed to make mistakes.

"There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so." Sure, Hamlet was possibly insane, but it's still applicable ;)

But yeah, this realization is why my particular morals are based on how my actions affect other people, because there's nobody to tell me, objectively, that what I do is actually right, and the only way I can be sure that what I do isn't wrong is by living in a way that doesn't objectively harm others. It's pretty liberating to cast off standards that ultimately keep you from living a life that's good for you c:
