Body image crap

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I could use your guys perspective on something.

All my life, I've had a somewhat... skewed view of my body type. I think this has a lot to do with my parents both being very tall and naturally skinny people. Plus, my mom has a wasting disease that depletes her body mass, so her idea of normal isn't exactly standard...

Anyway, here's my problem. I'm adopted, and have a very different body than my family. I'm very short-- under 5'0", and weigh around 107 lbs. But I don't have tiny bones. I suppose I sort of have an average build. But I've lost a lot of weight within the last few years, and people have been calling me "skinny". I've never thought of myself as skinny, mostly because I never heard it applied to myself growing up.

Currently, I'm a 30A bust, 27 inch waist, and 34 inch hips, and 107. For someone under 5 feet, I imagine that's pretty bulky, right?

Admittedly my own yardstick for that sort of thing is a bit skewed (I'm about a foot taller than you and not exactly petite), but you sound tiny to me.

TW for weight and fat discussion stuff

I'm just under 5 feet and weigh just over 130 pounds, which, going solely by my BMI of 27, makes me overweight but not obese. BMI isn't all that useful a concept in defining how healthy any one person is and also tends to be less accurate for those of us who are shorter than 5 feet, but assuming you're 4'11", that works out to a BMI of 21.6. To be overweight as far as BMI goes at 107 lbs, you'd have to be less than 4'6". There's a lot of wiggle room, so if you were really muscular, you could have a BMI that would get you classified as obese simply because muscle weighs more than fat. Without knowing anything about your exercise or eating habits I'd say it doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with you. A few pounds on a short person can make a big difference in appearance, but I'm having a hard time imagining someone with your measurements as "bulky," unless you're leaving something out, like that by 'under 5 feet' you mean 'closer to 4' and by 'bulky' you mean "I'm a professional bodybuilder."

Not really? It actually sounds pretty skinny to me.

I'm 5 foot. My bust is 62, my waist is 48 and I weigh about 220. I'd say you're petite as hell.

THAT's bulky? What would you define as "skinny"? I'd say you were about perfect.
