Re: Those frozen threads are part of why I'm embarassed about my potential autism

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-24 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I increasingly tend to side-eye a lot of friends-and-family efforts to 'enable independence' for autistics because whenever I see any of the modern/online stuff, it's always for other people to help them out (things like teachers and parents helping younger kids, or advocacy to get tutors and other external help or concessions for older kids and adults). How exactly are autistic people supposed to become functionally independent if, in the rush for everyone to help them, there's no room for them - those who can, at least - to help themselves? >.<

As for the help - I think I love you and want to have your Internet babies if you've got anything that can help me. :D (But that said, please don't put yourself out if it's troublesome or out of your way - while this sort of thing is frustrating for me, it's not detrimental and I have still been able to do fairly well in school and even manage a social life with what tools I have). I'll have to look up skillstreaming when I get home (currently answering from school ironically enough). From the looks of a brief google, it seems to designed to teach social skills rather than study skills, but I'll take a deeper look into it later. ♥

And no worries about awkwardness! I'd be one of the biggest hypocrites on the planet if I tried to be snide about being overtly-academic (one of my friends in elementary school had to act as occasional unofficial translator for me, when talking to other people, because I "used too many long words"). Hopefully your kids will be able to help themselves a little easier than I have. :)
