The Speed of Fandom

Hope I'm not too late to join in.

I think my issue is that when I'm in fandom, writing fic for a series that is still in progress (book series, tv series, manga series) feels weird to write in. I hate getting Jossed, so I like to have a complete set (season) in hand before writing for fic considering I like to write fic that is 'between episodes' or things that feel like they could be part of the season/show. I've actually been complemented on my ability to do that.

When the internet was catching up and things anime were so hard to come by with subtitles, this wasn't a problem. Many of the older fandoms, we all had the complete set/season at the same time and we enjoyed as a fandom. Since getting anime in general was so difficult and there was so little of it coming out with subtitles, the world felt smaller. More compact.

Today, there area a whole host of fansubbers out there for anime so it's coming out faster and with reliable regularity. Or torrenters are managing to get single episodes up very quickly on torrent sites. Speed of light accessibility and availability and instant gratification.

which means it seems like these days that once a series/season is completed, the fans move on to the next new shiny and by the time I'm ready to start writing, the fandom has pretty much died out.

tl;dr I liked it when things moved at a slower pace and fans stayed in fandoms longer before moving on.
