What Kid’s Books Do You Read?

Nostalgia has me reading every new Dear America book, and I usually pick up the Newbery winner (I just finished Splendors and Glooms, a Newbery Honor book). I also follow whatever Lemony Snicket is up to.

So F!S, not counting books from your childhood that you still reread now, what children’s books do you read?

I hate hate HATE that it’s become acceptable to show people vomiting onscreen. It was unpleasant enough to hear it from offstage, but now they keep showing it to us for some reason. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t watch any new media while eating, no matter the genre, because I don’t know when it’ll show up. And I have never seen an example that was funny enough to outweigh the sheer disgusting.

There's a show from the 90's that got canceled in the early 00's. It was supposed to have a movie that tied up the show's loose ends, but it was never allowed to be made. Fans have been trying for years to bring the movie back-and it seems not there's a good chance of it happening.

The creator is working on a new show for the company now, though. I'm a little afraid he'll get too busy with the new show to mention the movie anymore. :(

Just want to say, I really like this place. I've been using it as a sort of fandom newspaper (because there's always news about the latest wank and fannish nonsense). Coolest newspaper ever. <3

Me too! I've felt a bit out of touch with general fandom trends for a while now (I don't get tumblr and I find it very difficult to navigate) and F!S makes me feel connected. I mainly lurk but I just love this place.

I understand that some of you are fans of the Hannibal as well, but it's pathetic how you keep trying to make that cross-over happen. Hannibal would put with Sherlock for about 5 seconds, if that. And many of us who are mainly Hannibal fans are sick of you lot already. Be a little self-aware, please.

After all those years I'm still not over it.

As soon as we were both done reading Deathly Hallows I told my best-fandom-friend that I shipped Dumbledore and Grindelwald and she laughed at me, calling me delusional, nooo come on there was ZERO chemistry between them, what next, adding Ephias to the ship?
Whatever, I kept shipping them.

Then came The Interview That Made Them Canon, she ran and suscribed to the main shipping community and started acting as thought she had shipped them from the begining. Never apoligized for her previous behavior.
And this is were I jumped ship in disgut.

I (still) adore Ricardo Montalban and ST:WOK was my all time favorite Trek film.

I pretty much hated the thread yesterday that dismissed him as anything other than a white guy. I'm betting you never read his autobiography where he talked about his early years in Mexico. You probably never knew that he was blacklisted before Fantasy Island for protesting the Frito Bandito (a racist character from a commercial).

Maybe he didn't look like your idea of what a POC should be but I think he was a good man who tried to honor his heritage.

I have a huge childbirth kink... in fiction only. In real life, the idea I could get pregnant squicks me to no end.

I like pregnancy stories but childbirth... eh, depends on how it was written. I can do without the whole panic and mayhem aspect of birth or the more detailed depictions of it.

I've been pregnant a few times and, aside from some discomfort along the route, it wasn't a bad experience. Oddly comforting, to house something so small and to be so completely enmeshed with it for a period of time then have it become a whole person on its own.

How to cheat at kink meme

Once upon a time, I posted a prompt to my favorite (kinda small) fandom's kink meme that I was pretty enthusiastic about. It never got filled, and the kink meme kinda died out. Recently I copypasted the prompt to a much bigger and more prolific fandom's kink meme, switched out my pairing's names for the new fandom's biggest pairing, slapped "[Fandom A] - inspired AU" at the beginning, and sat back. It was filled within 72 hours.

So even though most of my fandom friends have moved past Harry Potter, I'm still into it. I'm fine that they've moved on, but if I as much mention the books or the fandom, because they'll get quiet or awkward. Why does this happen? Are you not supposed to mention closed fandoms/canons?

They might find it awkward because they know you're still into it, so it feels like something you should still have in common but don't.

Or maybe they feel they've grown out of that fandom and are embarrassed that they ever shipped x/y or raved over certain tropes?

I'm only in my mid-20's and already I'm starting to feel like I've made the wrong decisions in life. I pushed my love of something aside to get an education in something I thought was easily hirable and pays well enough, only now I've graduated and still don't have a job and I feel so utterly worthless.

And I look at beautiful, shining, successful people in the field I shunned and am starting to realize that I will never be them, and it's making me cry. And I know that field is risky and you're almost always destined to be starving artist than a superstar, but I'm really beginning to wonder if I haven't made a terrible, irreversible mistake.

Awkward crushes

I have a super awkward crush on a friend. We met at work and found out pretty quickly we shared 101 fannish interests. We're good friends now and have even formed a film club, going to see all the latest geeky comic book releases with a group of other friends. Sometimes we just hit the town and go drinking together. On one of these nights I realised I was looking at him thinking "Jesus god boy, I could just climb you like a fucking tree". I'm even dreaming of him.

The kicker? I'm married, and completely in love with my husband. He's amazing and I would do anything for him. I feel so creepy and guilty and awful for having this crush outside our marriage, but I just can't help it.

So talk to me and make me feel better. F!S. What awkward crushes have you had, and how to you get over them?

I had a huuuuuge crush on my thesis advisor (who also happened to be about twice my age). I had to meet with him one-on-one every week for a year, and I'm pretty sure I spent at least 60% of that time blushing madly. If he noticed (and he probably did, because it was pretty obvious), he was nice enough never to say anything about it.

And... I didn't get over it. In fact, I just saw him this past weekend, and had to restrain myself (only moderately successfully) from hanging around awkwardly in his vicinity while he was trying to talk to other people. >>;

What's with fics where people sleep with someone who either killed or hated their father? Case in point, the Mohinder/Sylar shippers. Even as hatesex I never got that - how can you have sex at all with someone who killed your father? But even Harry and Draco confused me; sure, Draco never hurt James, but he made it clear he thought his death was hilarious.

Feels good to get that out.

Wanted to add that I'm not saying I think you're a bad person for shipping those - I just don't understand the appeal, but if you are a shipper I'd love to hear your perspective.
