F!S Anon Meme (the ??th)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with recaptchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

(Today's post is below.)

What's your desktop background right now?

A black-and-white Ansel Adams photograph of some storm clouds over some mountains.

It's calming, and also extremely neutral and non-descript, which I like.

Probably no one's gonna see this or comment on this because I'm late to the party, but whatever, it's something that's been on my mind since coming back the F!S in the last few months.

I really don't understand the hate a lot of people here have for Tumblr. So it's not like LJ. Is it supposed to be? I've never had any trouble interacting with people or having discussions. Sure, it's not perfect and there are a lot of whiny teenagers and rabid fangirls, but it's not all that. Tumblr is what you make of it, really.

Tumblr issues

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Mine basically boil down to two things: leaving comments and attribution. Tumblr's always had issues with those (even back in 2010) Unless they can make the comment system a little more intuitive and make it more difficult for people to eliminate the names of the original artists.contributors/what have you, I will not sign up for that service.

I've recently been rewatching Red vs Blue and now I'm remembering why I stopped in the first place. Right about season five I stop having any clue what's going on. I want to catch up, but I'm just so fucking confused.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Red vs Blue is awesome! You should definitely keep trying to watch it. I would say that the plot in the first five seasons isn't really as important as the humor, although season 6 onward the plot gets heavier. But seriously, the first five seasons are just random and hilarious. Don't overthink it and it'll make sense. :)

But I'll try to help out by summarizing the plot so far: basically, there are Reds and Blues and they're fighting because reasons. Church dies, Tex shows up and she's a Freelancer and his ex-girlfriend, Church comes back as a ghost, Tex dies and comes back as a ghost. Tex had an evil AI named Omega implanted, and he escaped and made the rounds before settling in Doc. He wants to take over the world for reasons. The Reds and Blues go on an adventure to try and stop him, travel in time, Church goes to the past and meets a computer named Gary, Tucker gets a sword, they meet an alien, Tucker and some other people go on a quest, everyone eventually goes back to the canyon. Also, there's a subplot where the Reds and Blues are the same (or are they?) and a bounty hunter named Wyoming is hired to take Tucker out because he knows the Truth.

That's basically the first four seasons. (I really, really don't blame you for being confused.) Where did you get lost in the fifth one?

Shows that should have been good

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone know of any shows that they dislike partly because they could be so much better if it weren't for Executive Meddling, pandering to the audience or other things?

For me, it's Heroes - I feel like the show could have been groundbreaking, but it had no idea what kind of show it wanted to be, and it was also scared of pissing off Sylar fangirls.

Re: Shows that should have been good

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that way about Grimm. It was trying to be both a police show and a supernatural show, and it's pretty much good at neither of those. I think some research into actual police work and some better casting would have helped enormously. (Let's face it, Nick does not look like he's capable of beating anyone in a fight, and it just ends with his enemies looking pathetic.)

Baseball Fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a St. Louis Cardinals fan, and I'd really love a movie version of the 2011 World Series. It played out exactly like most sports movies do, and my team has never had a film made about it (though they made an appearance in the American version of Fever Pitch when they lost to the Red Sox in 2004). Is this a silly thing to want?

Nostalgia of the previous fandom experience

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be a prolific and acknowledged writer (on my language), roleplay lots and have dear fandom friends. Several years and a long-lasting bout of mental illness I'm still struggling with, I've found myself with a writer's block the size of Soviet Russia, only trickling fanfic once in a blue moon, ejected from the RPG I used to play on (and the only on my language, to boot), and mostly alone due to a mix of said mental illness jading the relationship with my friends, and them doing some very very shitty things to me.

I was an emo brat back on 2006, but at least I had a good time when I was on the Internet. How I long for Ye Olden Days at LJ, when the 'net was my solace and I felt loved and respected. And I'm way too socially anxious and blocked to start anew after things definitively went to hell on an express train last year.

Has anyone else went through something similar?

Fuck yes. My fandom life went down in fire when a BNF decided to sic her fans on me.

Horror Genre Fans I need your help!

I've never, ever, been able to find this. And I haven't found anyone else who knew what I was talking about either. It may have been from a movie, or a tv show, I have no idea! I saw it when I was really young, and this is the only thing I remember from it. Okay:

A woman miscarriages (Or finds out she's infertile I think. Something like that) She hears a baby crying and goes outside. She finds a baby in a dumpster, or a shack. Her boyfriend/husband comes home and she's crocheting something. He leans in to talk to her and the baby jams the crochet hooks into the guy's eyes.

And that's all I remember. :X

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gothic_(film)

Cynthia is traumatized by the death of her baby after leaving him in a bathtub, where he accidentally drowned.

...

She then confronts Ma and stabs her to death with her sewing needles

i love homestuck a lot but my fannish activities were almost exclusively on the Internet until a few weeks ago when i attended a homestuck meetup in my area

it was a huge mistake. people were rude and obnoxious, the people organizing the event were unprepared and ultimately we were asked to leave our venue. it was a nightmare and i was made so uncomfortable that i left three hours early.

the problem is that now i cannot participate in the homestuck fandom without thinking of the event! whenever i see eridan all i smell is bo and it just grosses me out. has anybody else dealt with this kind of thing? or has anyone had any experiences like this?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's unfortunate. I have been to some Homestuck meetups that were really fun but RL fandom activities are usually a mix of really cool and horribly awkward. I'm sorry it affected you so strongly and I hope you have some positive experiences in the future.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going to "disappear" from the internet (and post anon instead of signed in on f!s) for a while. I haven't been around very much lately and my online friends haven't seemed to care. I feel like I put a lot of effort my friendships by making all the first moves and trying to make plans for rl meet-ups. I want someone to care enough about me for once and put some effort into making me feel as if you like me and want to be my friend.

(I'm late to the anon party, I know.)

Worst fic ideas?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone besides me had ideas for fic that were doomed from the start? As in, you could see the wank coming a mile away even though you knew you would be wiling to work to nail the characterization/plot/tone/etc.? (My latest one of these may involve the new Star Trek movie, and I think that's all I should probably say about it.)

Re: Worst fic ideas?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-28 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
yes.

and I created a live journal to house those fics because I'm tired of fighting the urge to write them knowning they'd be considered seriously problematic for the fandom.

well...except for the fact that I'm not even trying with characterization. it's all ID writing for me.

the wank could be glorious, though.

The Speed of Fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hope I'm not too late to join in.

I think my issue is that when I'm in fandom, writing fic for a series that is still in progress (book series, tv series, manga series) feels weird to write in. I hate getting Jossed, so I like to have a complete set (season) in hand before writing for fic considering I like to write fic that is 'between episodes' or things that feel like they could be part of the season/show. I've actually been complemented on my ability to do that.

When the internet was catching up and things anime were so hard to come by with subtitles, this wasn't a problem. Many of the older fandoms, we all had the complete set/season at the same time and we enjoyed as a fandom. Since getting anime in general was so difficult and there was so little of it coming out with subtitles, the world felt smaller. More compact.

Today, there area a whole host of fansubbers out there for anime so it's coming out faster and with reliable regularity. Or torrenters are managing to get single episodes up very quickly on torrent sites. Speed of light accessibility and availability and instant gratification.

which means it seems like these days that once a series/season is completed, the fans move on to the next new shiny and by the time I'm ready to start writing, the fandom has pretty much died out.

tl;dr I liked it when things moved at a slower pace and fans stayed in fandoms longer before moving on.

Re: The Speed of Fandom

Are you me?!

I think people move faster these days, but I'm really not sure why. I do think some people are in fandom to be in a fandom more than anything else, so they're probably among the ones leaving fast. I agree that it sucks though.
