Some ground rules:

Our lilacs are just finally fully open, but all this rain and cold seems to be draining them of their vibrancy. Curse you unseasonably cold northern weather!

English Majors?

Anyone else here a, an English Major, and b, feel like being one was kind of like being in fandom? I totally felt like we were a little fandom of a bunch of things at once. I've never told them that though, because I think they'd probably stare at me like I'm crazy.

I think once you find your major it's all kind of like being in a fandom. I was an anthropology major and we had Malinowski fangirls, Mead fangirls, fights over different schools of thought, etc.

My partner and I plan on getting married once we scrounge up enough money for the marriage license, but I've been calling him my boyfriend at work, and neither of us like the word "husband," and the thought of telling people I'm married/I have a husband feels really mature and awkward, but not many people actually understand that when I say "partner," I'm talking in an intimate sense (which is really the only reason I started calling him my boyfriend in the first place). ARGH.

Mostly just bitching because this wouldn't even be an issue if, a) we had non-ambiguous non-gendered words for intimate partners, and b) labels implying marriage weren't taken more seriously than those that only imply an intimate relationship. Fuck you, English.

Kink meme etiquette

What's the appropriate etiquette for re-posting a prompt on a kink meme when you've outed yourself as the OP and someone started a fill for it but it's been over a year since an update? Is a year-plus okay to post the prompt again in the hopes of garnering new interest, or should I wait longer?

One of my friends refuses to watch Elementary because she thinks it's stupid, and she can figure out all the plot twists. But.

She's never watched any of it.

She claims she can figure out all the plot twists because someone (who's already watched the episode!) tells her about it each week, and I jsut want to shake her and point out that

1. someone who's already watched the episode & knows the answer is going to have biases, conscious or unconscious

2. you don't get to say the show sucks when you've literally not watched a single episode

3. you are not as clever as you think you are when you're basing your opinion off of someone who already knows the answer telling you the episode instead of watching it yourself

like, if she actually watched the episodes, and didn't like them, whatever, but she hasn't.

I have a ridiculous hatred for John Sheppard and a large part of that is directly due to the SGA fandom.

guh I fucking hate the superwholock fandoms trying to latch onto Hannibal and make a fucking family.i'm absolutely pissed,i can't even articulate it. Hannibal fandom doesn't need a babysitter,hannibal fandom needs a renewal.

In the case of Sherlock, it doesn't even make sense for them to be a "father" figure so to speak because it's only had six episodes and the next three have been put off until god knows when. They have the smallest canon (at least direct canon) of probably any TV show fandom out there.

I hate the superwhoavengersmerlinwho-the-fuck-knows-whatlock mythical monsters that are unleashed on AO3. Apart from anything else, they're always umpteen chapters long (so keep on appearing in the newly posted lists) and they frequently have a bazillion tags that make it sound like the author is falling-down-drunk.

If the source material is full of gore and disturbing things,do I actually have to warn for it when posting promo pics (that don't include plot spoilers) or can I expect people to be aware of the possibility that it might be disturbing?

that depends on the canon itself, i guess. like if you tell people to go watch hannibal (who is a character one would recognize even if they haven't seen the movies) they'll most likely be aware it could have disturbing content.

if it's something that at first glance wouldn't give off any vibes that it could be potentially disturbing and the summary is vague, then yeah i'd warn for gore and what not. what canon are you thinking of?

Am I the only one who hates when people call it that? One other person created and produces it, and two other people write for it. I'm not sure how much influence Moffat has behind the scenes, but there are things that happen in the episodes he doesn't write that don't strike me as things he'd do (Molly's character development in TRF, for example), so he doesn't control everything.

I hate hate hate how much fandom seems to incorporate mental illness. Like you have to have something wrong with you in order to fit in. Which just means rich teenage girls and ambitionless 20-somethings with no real traumas constantly whining about every little thing that happens to them, or if they can't think of anything, doing the SJW route and talking about how oppressed they are because they're bisexual (even though they have only ever dated men and are only interested in men) and demiromantic.

I hate that there aer people like this all over fandom and that my fandoms seem to be their place to flock together and whine. Yeah there are lots of people with legitimate problems too, but I'm so sick of hearing about it!

Someone just rang my doorbell. It's past midnight here and I'm not expecting anyone, and I'm a bit freaked out. And instead of pulling up my big girl pants and just answering the intercom, I just ignored it. I can't actually see the front door of the block from my flat so I'll probably never know who it was or what they wanted. But now I'm completely paranoid that it was a) vitally important, or b) someone trying to check if the flat was empty before burgling me. I feel so stupid. It was probably a lost pizza delivery guy or something right?

Nothing wrong with ignoring it. If they're lost, they can go to a gas station or something; bothering someone past midnight--even with good intentions--is rude as fuck. I'm in a similar situation a lot (I live at the corner of two major streets) and nothing bad has ever come from ignoring it.

It's a lot easier to pretend to be Normal and Not Weird Shit when pretty much nobody gets to know you beyond a couple of reblogs. Especially when you can cover your actual personality completely with animated gifs and WHAT IS AIR.

I am still deeply unsettled by most Zutara shippers. It's weird, because I see the potential in the pairing and even love to think about the progression of their relationship (as enemies/friends, but it does makes me understand where shippers are coming from) And yet, besides a select few, I cannot shake the prejudice that Zutara shippers are some of the most pedantic and melodramatic shippers I've ever encountered.

This was brought on by a post on tumblr that said "I studied animation to make an Avatar movie in which Zutara is canon" and my brain shut down at the absolute horror I felt about that idea.
