stop trying to make dw happen. it's not going to happen.

I'm secretly hoping that Yahoo ruins Tumblr and DW happens as a last resort.

I'd agree except there's a child inside of me that remembers a time when Yahoo WAS the internet and I just want something to go right for them.

They won't come to DW if Tumblr gets run into the ground. Most likely they'll turn to something like Reddit or Reddit itself. Journal sites like DW and LJ aren't efficient enough and they look horrible on phones.

And yet, here we are.

My understanding of WHY people started to leave LJ is not very clear, but I get the sense that the administrative problems (and the spam, etc) weren't really the main reason. In which case, it's just an issue of the cycle of life and death of internet platforms; people moved to tumblr because it was different from the journal format that DW still uses.

I ended up leaving because the new ugly layout was giving me migraines and, from what I remember, I wasn't the only one.

Reasons:

Dropping subject lines as an option for comments
Bad color scheme for the eyes
Weird threading problems
Icon selection issues
Unresponsive and uncaring administrative staff
Mass journal deletion
Losing spell check for comments
Communities not accepting posts because of a bug
Other miscellaneous bugs

These are the most commonly cited reasons for leaving, but there are definitely more. LJ had an intermediate period where it was a shithole, and while it's definitely gotten better with fixing some of the bugs, it still has its issues.

Yeah, pretty much all of these. I still have a few friends and communities that haven't migrated across to DW yet, but if they ever do move over, my old LJ is getting deleted without a second thought.

If it had to leave LJ then at least it could have gone some place with basic privacy options. I don't care if it's DW or anywhere else, but I don't want ABSOLUTELY FUCKING EVERYTHING to be completely public unless we Skype or something.

Tumblr has privacy options
You can lock your whole blog from public viewing or just certain posts
You can even set up guest passwords for viewing your account like some people do on photobucket
