F!S Anon Meme (the ??th)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with recaptchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

(Today's post is below.)

Shows that should have been good

Anyone know of any shows that they dislike partly because they could be so much better if it weren't for Executive Meddling, pandering to the audience or other things?

For me, it's Heroes - I feel like the show could have been groundbreaking, but it had no idea what kind of show it wanted to be, and it was also scared of pissing off Sylar fangirls.

I feel that way about Grimm. It was trying to be both a police show and a supernatural show, and it's pretty much good at neither of those. I think some research into actual police work and some better casting would have helped enormously. (Let's face it, Nick does not look like he's capable of beating anyone in a fight, and it just ends with his enemies looking pathetic.)

I personally thought Heroes devoted a bit too much energy to Claire and did not really develop people without abilities enough (with the notable exception of HRG). That latter really should have been given more emphasis since they were the lens through which most of us would (realistically) be viewing the situation.

This is a fantastic point that I've never heard/read anyone make before. A lot of people complain about Sylar (rather deservedly so), but Claire and Peter probably needed a little less time in the spotlight after Season 1, too. Another problem was that they wanted us to care for new characters after too little development.

I'd say that Season 1 was best with developing non-powered characters like Simone, Janice (Matt's wife), and Audrey (the FBI Agent), but yeah, more was still needed there.

The Legend of Korra. So much potential wasted. If I say anymore it will turn into a five-page essay.

I want your five page essay on this.

I want your five page essay, too. I honestly can't pinpoint anything I dislike about the show and yet I was disappointed with it.

Completely agreed. Around episode... nine, I think? When there's that part with the non-benders being rounded up, and the woman calling to Korra about how she was THEIR bender, too... I remember thinking, "Holy shit, this show is absolutely amazing. A protagonist who's actually going to have her views challenged!"

And then, of course, the rest of the season happened.

Even the last episode would have been somewhat salvagable if it had ENDED with Korra opening her eyes in the Avatar state, having unlocked the spiritual side, but needing to go through more trials to unlock the rest. No, "Oh, you're sad, have the rest of your powers back", no cringeworthy, "Oh, Korra!" "Oh, ~Mako~!" (and I actually DID like Makorra at the beginning of the season, incidentally!), nothin'. Just setting up the next book beautifully.

Glee's producers pandered to pretty much everything fans asked of it, and now it's just a mess.

Once Upon a Time: I don't know what's happening in that writers' room, but either Disney/ABC Powers That Be are meddling with it, or the writers are dumb, but whuuuut is happening. Too many characters, too much stupid, and I've just about given up at this point. :(

+ infinity

The writers need to be fucking shot. I am sick at how they've turned the show into such garbage. I've read fanfics by tweenies with more character development and better plotting.

It's not even 2 dimensional anymore. I'd kill to have the cardboard cutout villains back instead of what they're giving us now.

(I feel like freaking Agrajag from HGTTG, I want to gnash my teeth so badly in frustration.)

Fucking yes. Heroes season one was pretty much perfection. I just recently rewatched it with my partner and it was just as good as I remembered, but we watched it as a standalone series and pretended the rest didn't exist. Sylar should have stayed gone.

With Heroes, the first season was fantastic, but they just didn't know how to move the formula forward. I think it would have been interesting if they'd had new batches of heroes in each season, building to an epic finale season where they all get together. The Haitian, HRG, and Claude could have showed up in each season to string everybody together.

If there was a fic series of this, I'd totally read it.

Gravity Falls. It started out as a fun show about paranormal mystery. Now it's just a show about Dipper's Attempt At Dating Wendy# and random B-plots with Mabel. Where did the mystery go? Where did the BOOKS go? Hell, where did the whole "Gideon wants the mystery shack", plot go?

I'm going to cheat here because it's a movie and not a show, but I'm STILL angry that Avatar (blue people Avatar) was so formulaic. I know why they had to do it, but it's still frustrating.
They kind of started bringing up how he was having trouble remembering which version of him was real and how the human world felt disjointed now and I was so excited to see where they were going with that and I thought there could be some very interesting modern parallels in there... and then they never brought it up again and everyone lived happily ever after.

I mean, Avatar was okay, but there was a fantastic original movie in there that they completely missed out on.
