F!S Anon Meme (the ??th)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with recaptchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

(Today's post is below.)

I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I (still) adore Ricardo Montalban and ST:WOK was my all time favorite Trek film.

I pretty much hated the thread yesterday that dismissed him as anything other than a white guy. I'm betting you never read his autobiography where he talked about his early years in Mexico. You probably never knew that he was blacklisted before Fantasy Island for protesting the Frito Bandito (a racist character from a commercial).

Maybe he didn't look like your idea of what a POC should be but I think he was a good man who tried to honor his heritage.

You might want to find a picture where they didn't darken his skin (which was done for a lot of his roles including Khan).

Yeah that was a pretty insulting thread.

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That thread was full of what seemed to be random racism. I was shocked. "I don't care what he identifies as, he looks like a white man so that's all he can ever be and I, a random citizen, know best!"

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 and these were the SJWs who are allegedly so "against" racism

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think I missed that thread? (I'm glad for that, really glad) but I've had it with people claiming that he *had* to be white because he looked white and to hell with any other considerations, including how he identified as, or how Mexican culture deals with skin color.

Says the really annoyed light-skinned Mexican who is tired as hell of people trying to tell her that she has no idea how her country works.

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Be glad you missed it, it was pretty awful.

It was also full of 'he's not really mexican because his parents' etc, which is completely irrelevant because his parents' heritage does exactly fuck-all to negate his experience as a Mexican immigrant working in the US and his own identity as a Mexican (which has nothing to do with skin colour), but clearly that concept went way over some people's heads.

On top of that, a lot of the people dismissing him because he was pale were also using that as an excuse for whitewashing Kahn in the new film. They may have cast a mexican man (who these people insist was white...) as Khan, but 31 years later they cast the whitest british dude ever. The character was still indian, no matter who they cast in 1982.

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Except he was originally supposed to be Nordic superman (like Hitler's ideal). And Khan was never explicitly Indian. He was just probably one based off his name (which is two last names and one non-existent name).

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"The character was originally conceived of as a Nordic superman by scriptwriter Carey Wilber before his ancestry was changed in script revisions." His ancestry WAS changed. If the name Kahn Noonien Singh isn't a big enough indicator...

I do think that was kind of stupid, but I can kind of see where they were coming from? Especially coming from tumblr, where I kept hearing about Redd (claims to be Latina, passes as white in their pictures, claims they're ~so oppressed~), it can be frustrating to see someone who looks white, and yet they keep talking about how they're totally a POC, and totally get to talk over anyone else, and they totally are the One True Keeper of the definition of racism.

The problem is, Ricardo Mantelban was around in the 1960's, where things (race-wise) were different.

Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I'm trying to form my thoughts, but it's not working that well, I feel like.

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
RICARDO MONTALBAN IS NOT WHITE. OKAY? OKAY.

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know he's not, but I can easily see why people who are used to the tumblr/net culture of "you have to be ~super oppressed or you're a ~horrible person" and thusly the claim of opression!!!!!1!!! from people who "pass" in such a way that no one would know they're oppressed, but still use that to claim superiority over others (which is a long round about way of saying REDD) might do a double take at someone who looks "white" being called a POC, though the time period *needs* to be taken into account.

Bless this comment.

Honestly I think if they had choosen a POC, SJWs would just get their panties in a twist over that. "OH LOOK AT WHITE BOY KIRK PUNCHING A BROWN GUY IN THE FACE! Of COURSE the brown guy is the terrorist."

They were going to get bitched at anyway, might as well go with the actor who has a fan following.

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What they should have done was just not use Khan. There were plenty of white villains Cumberbatch could have played if they desperately wanted him, and there were plenty of white villains they could have used to avoid dark skin = terrorist assumptions.

They made the wrong choice for both.

Re: I usually love F!S but sometimes...nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This! Or they could have, y'know, invented a new villain. Instead of retconning the Eugenics Wars to take place in Jolly Olde England.

OP here.

Thank you for the responses here. I don't usually post anything I consider argumentative or contrary for fear of coming off as a fool. Today was the first time I challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone and the whole "posting in the wrong place" nearly broke what nerve I had. I had to walk away from my computer for a while to curb my anxiety because I rather expected to be bashed or embarrassed for my "feels".

Thank you for making this a far more pleasant experience that my fears expected, which is why I usually love this page. You often surprise me in the neatest, nicest ways.

Thank you for posting. :) I was the anon leading the "he wasn't white" brigade in the post yesterday, so I'm really glad to see other people thinking about and responding to the issues presented. So, thank you, OP.

If that anon had a problem with Montalban I'd love to see how (s)he would react to G.K. Butterfield.

Come to think of it, I'd like to see what other (self proclaimed) SJW's think of this gentleman.

I'm really glad to see so many people agreeing with you. I normally have a pretty high threshold for fuckery on the internet, but I found that whole thing really upsetting (and am I imagining things, or was there another one a couple of days ago too?)

I actually had to close my tab and take a couple of deep breaths. Can't remember the last time that happened. And thanks to everyone who stepped into that thread to disagree, too.
