In hindsight, he kind of existed to be Fridged for Roy's character development.

He was a good plot device and I think he's awesome, but I can also see how people wouldn't like him. Takes all types.

This is probably one of the least wanky things you can say in the FMA fandom. Now if it were: "I don't like him in [insert version here]; only in [insert other version here]" there might be a shitstorm.
