I don't know what song this is, but a beeline is a straight line, and hide can mean someone's skin or body so maybe it's talking about the 'Don't date someone purely for sex' cliche?

It's an interesting though, considering that (at least at the time Poses was compiled) Rufus was known for being very promiscuous. (As far as I know, the song is autobiographical like the rest of the album.)

Alright, I'm going to tell you my interpretation, just from reading the line. I haven't actually heard the song.
A bee-line is a straight, determined line from one thing to another. 'Hide' is obviously a term for skin, but it's used to describe skin in a particular 'being attacked' way.

What I think the line is trying to say is don't draw a path that leads aggression to another person, i.e. don't throw blame around or be viciously accusing, or incite others to be hateful.

Just my two cents.

I like this version.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason I took it as "don't associate specific things/characteristics to anybody/group of people" as in "don't stereotype" but I have no idea why that was what came to mind. My brain is weird.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
this is my interpretation as well

like, "don't label people", and stuff

(Anonymous) 2013-05-26 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I always took the double line "don't sew bee-lines to anybody's hide/save your poison for a lover who is on your side" to mean don't be randomly bitchy and negative to everyone you meet; let the people you know and trust know what's wrong because they'll know how to help.

Probably not Rufus' actual intention but that's how I've always taken it.

sometimes i get sad and then i remember that one time rufus wainwright touched me with his hand after i waited outside his tour bus for 4 hours

then i feel creepy instead of sad

You actually got to see him in person? I'm majorly jealous. What was he like?

well i was hyperventilating outside the tour bus with my friend, then said friend spotted him from across the street and he threw me into the air and we screamed "RUFUS RUFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSSS"

rufus was just walking around casually being one of my favorite humans alive, saw us and waved us over. we sprinted across the intersection as if we were parkour champions and he was like "hi" and we were like "RUFUS YOU'RE RUFUS" and he was like "yes i am" and we shouted "AS;S;RE SEJKL AHHHH!!! PICTURE!!!?!! I GUHH" or something like that

he took a picture with both of us & was friendly. in retrospect i would say he seemed shy. it's an extreme credit to his character that he didn't taze us when we approached him because we were acting like serial killers. i think i told him i was in love with him

I don't think I'd be any better! I'd probably try to touch his hair.

And shy, huh? Interesting. I read that interview he did with Mark Gatiss and he seemed anything but.

But omfg you are so lucky seriously.

maybe he just seemed shy because he was very afraid. his hair was voluminous despite the humidity

and ugh yeah i know he was on my "list of people i want to meet before i am dead" (i actually have a list. not sure if weird)

Haha, maybe. I've got an informal list, I suppose. Him, Neil Gaiman, Mark Gatiss, Sharon Osbourne...

neil gaiman is on mine too!

There's a lot of violent imagery in the song...if beeline=straight line and hide=skin, could it be someone being whipped or beaten?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I see you refer to this song, and all that happens is for my brain to sing 'you who were born with the sun above your shoulders'. Somehow this phrase has become my ideal imagery for romance and I can't even think about most of the other lines in any critical way...

So maybe someone else has suggested this, but a beeline is like a 'cut here' line, which suggests cutout -> stereotype, sewing to their hide being applying these cookie-cutter roles to people.
