Most of those huge successful, groundbreaking female anime and manga authors.... write under male pseudonyms and weren't known to be women until after they became successful. Most people who aren't pretty hardcore fans of the series still don't know they're women. One of my friends who's been a casual fan of Fullmetal Alchemist for a long time just found out, less than a year ago, that it's by a woman.
