Seriously, though, anon, if you only read fics about "John" and "Jane" Shepard, you've missed some of the very best fic in the fandom, to your loss.

I've been out of the fandom for aaaaggggeeees, but this was one of my favourite yuri fics (with a named Shepard).

Never been in those fandoms so I can't comment, but suffice it to say that my experiences in other game fandoms has been entirely different o_o

I don't mind it so much if the name isn't used entirely in place of 'Shepard', and/or is only used a few times in a fic. I can handle that as it's much less distracting/feels less like an OC.

Hell, it doesn't even have to be John or Jane - many authors just use 'Shepard' 99% of the time, and it works.
