And does getting bitchy with malfunctioning technology help much? It never seems to work for me, 'cause it's as though technology has NO FEELINGS AT ALL or something.

If you're "desperate" and you need someone to help you, isn't that an even better reason to ask nicely? The word "please" hasn't turned up in this thread yet, I noticed. It won't work miracles, but I think you'll find that people will be more inclined to help you if you don't get pissy with them for something that isn't their fault.
