Didn't Dumbledore say the only thing to heal a soul was remorse? So I always figured that killing would create like... "fissures" in your soul, but not real tears, and if you feel remorse it'll heal itself, but if you make a horcrux it'll split the pieces beyond repair.

IN any case, JKR said that one of her editors asked how to make a horcrux and was so disgusted with the description that Jo decided never to put it in the books. So anon's idea of cannibalism may be true.

Did she ever post it online anywhere, or mention it in an interview? I never thought about how a horcrux was made before, but the description of that editor's reaction makes me REALLY want to know now.

Yeah. Like, it wouldn't heal totally, but normally people don't go around splitting their souls in the Potterverse.
