So...what do you think, is my father a racist?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
My father has this unfortunate habit of using extremely bad racial slurs against, say, politicians that he doesn't support who happen to be people of color. However, when he likes a politician who happens to be a person of color, than that politician gets Dad's vote and support and not a bad word said about them. It's confusing.

(I feel like I should add that English is nowhere near his first language, meaning he doesn't have a full grasp on how bad those slurs are. Then again I often think he uses them simply because the shock people display at hearing those terms is highly amusing to him.)

Your father says racist things. Based on the data you've given us, he may or may not be a racist person.

The US has a long, sordid history behind certain slurs, and your dad may not completely grasp just how interwoven that history is with the US cultural fabric. He knows people find them offensive, and finds that amusing, but he doesn't get the gravity of the problem. Many slurs, while horrendously offensive, just don't have that same kind of cultural weight here that others do, and I suspect your dad doesn't realize that.

So he isn't racist, he just uses slurs (that he probably don't comprehend well) against people he doesn't like.

So he knows to use these words only for people of a certain race who he doesn't like; therefore, he knows they're insults and that they're racially specific. Sorry, but even if he doesn't know exactly how bad they are in English, he knows he's using slurs and there's no way that's not racist.

He's using racist slurs, but I don't think he's necessarily racist.

My brother is sort of the same. He uses all kinds of slurs, though, and insults everyone and everything. Race, sexuality, body type, gender, health, religion, etc. He doesn't discriminate against, well, discriminating. Pretty much everyone's a target.

His jokes tend to be really fucking offensive and really fucking hilarious.

Just because everyone's a target doesn't negate the fact that he's discriminating. If you offend everyone you're just offensive to everyone, it doesn't magically make it not offensive.

Oh my gosh thank you.

I'd say that sounds like he is mostly racially insensitive, not completely racist.

My brother loves saying things just for the shock value and so does my father (though he usually refrains from saying racist things). Sometimes that is so irritating because I can't always tell if they mean things that way, don't think things through or just want to shock people (my father especially has a pretty good poker face).

Unless you're very specifically looking for an answer to that particular question, I think that framing this as a 'what he is' conversation rather than a 'what he did' conversation might not be the right way to approach this.

+1

I'm far from an expert but I think the answers to the second question are a lot more important

...I'll put it this way: What he's doing when he says those things is racist, in my opinion. I don't know your father, I can't say if he is or isn't racist. Based on what you said, I'm guessing he doesn't understand how badly those words can effect people who *aren't* the politician in question, or the actual history behind those words [and how it can make people view him.]

But again, I don't know him and there really isn't enough to say much about him either way.
