It has always been a bit like that, but these last couple of years it has gotten a lot worse. There isn't any content in the abuse, no attempts at humorous trolling (InsaneNoodleGuy notwithstanding), just really personal abuse. Worse the online abuse has started moving offline too. Fan-haters are literally trying to ruin people's jobs, lives and families offline.

I blame FFR, or possibly Bronies.

FFR?

The Federal Funds Rate. It makes people hate their lives and everyone else.

Fanfic Rants. It's an LJ community.

At least I assume that's what they're talking about.

I wasn't getting into fandom negativity as a whole, just people not being able to take critique on their fanfic.

Increased negativity I can maybe see increasing but there being people who are personally offended that you don't like their porn or because you think a certain character is OOC has been around forever. If anything, I've seen less of it but that's because I've learned how to avoid those people for the most part. Hence my comment of "depends on where you go."

So yeah, I wasn't talking about fandom negativity or harassment, just fic critique. Sorry for the confusion.

FFR? Like Fanficrants?

Holy shit you seriously think this attitude is the cause of that one little comm? cause wow that certainly doesn't add up. I seriously hope you mean something different cause else, wow.

In fairness FFR is a cesspit that prides itself on being as big a collection of snooty asswipes as is possible. They do a lot towards making respective fandoms unpleasant to be in.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. FFR's attitude had shifted enormously over the last few years from 'generally okay with some bad apples' to 'holy shit torch this orchard', but I don't think one LJ comm exactly made fandom as a whole change. More that fandom changed, and the change was reflected in the memberbase there.

Yeah fandom has gotten brattier as more and more kids in their early teens and younger have poured unsupervised into adult spaces on the web. Even very adult fandoms now have super large brat components. Fan Fic Rants has been way ahead of the curve on that, encouraging the brats to get shriller and shriller over certain things they just don't have the life experience to understand or the empathy that comes around a bit later on that the teens. Its an accelerant really.

I notice there's a lot of brats on the critic side as well.

But they're often touted as "right" unless they're being obviously stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-28 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true. I've seen people use "concrit" as an excuse to be downright cruel, and to try to impose their preferences (and in my fandom, prejudices) on others.
