Creator/showrunner hate?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
How many of you have had the experience of loving a serial work (thinking of TV shows, but other examples may apply), but really disliking (or gradually coming to dislike) what the creator/head writer/showrunner did with it? How do you reconcile loving the work with disliking that person's choices with the work?

I love vikings but I hats Michael hirst a little more every time I read or see something about him or the show.. idk how it will impact my interest in future seasons yet. We'll see

I feel like this question was crafted around the answer 'Doctor Who'.

I'm also sure fandom!secrets knows the full extent of Moffat's bullshit and understands why I/other fans dislike him and his work, so no need to go into detail.

I'm starting to feel this way about Doctor Who. It's hard because I've always been a big fan of the show, but gradually the NuWho storylines and characters are slowing eating away at my tolerance.

I'll probably just end up only watching Classic Who.

Oh, yes, Gossip Girl especially. I've boycotted anyone that's written or produced for Gossip Girl, and mercifully everything associated with a Gossip Girl writer/producer in some way was axed except for The Carrie Diaries and Hart of Dixie (boo).

I have another show I really think the showrunner could've done some adjustments to it to avoid retconning the material constantly throughout the show's run (and I'm amazed reviewers haven't picked up on this, I think), but I write AU fic to deal with the infinite retcons on the other show. And no, I want nothing to do with the show the showrunner's making next for the network, especially if it becomes the same show he's currently working on, but in a different setting. The years I've spent watching his current show live is enough.

The Grey's Anatomy fandom has a wonderful love/hate relationship with Shonda Rhimes, because she got us all to care too much about the characters that she loves to torture.

I just basically recognize that, even if I dislike some of the turns she took with the show (like crushing my OTP with a fucking airplane), I understand that she's doing it to create interesting drama. And even if it it's sometimes ridiculous and unbelievable, at least she's still trying. She hasn't just given up on the characters.

I don't quite love OUAT as a whole, but I do love aspects of it. I'm coming to despise the creator/showrunners and a certain cast member though (GG is so homophobic and stupid). As for reconciling, I have to stop reading about the show and their stupid remarks. I just concentrate on the show and, well, I just ignore/disregard the dumb decisions they do (I may or may not consider it canon due to how stupid whatever it is they pulled in the show--technically it may be canon since it's in the show, but it may not be canon to me if I'm going to write a fic--I get to retcon it in miy own mind).

Jeremy Carver, SPN's current showrunner. Even though I feel that the show's quality began to decline before he took the helms, he's really running it into the ground

Dude couldn't even keep his own mythology straight within a single season.

Veena Sud. If she'd had any idea who the killer was going to be before a few months before the anticlimactic reveal, The Killing would have been a much better show. For the first time ever, I'm disappointed that a cancelled show is being revived.

GRR!!! I feel you! The premise of the third season looks really good, but I'm not stupid enough to fall for it again. The end of the second season sucked so much that I feel duped into thinking that the show was that good. At most, it was just OK. A great idea that was completely botched. It also sucks that the show has really good actors, too. What a waste.

ahahahaha sadly I feel this way about most things I get into lately

Homestuck, Fate/stay night, Korra: all of these are things with really interesting worldbuilding and characters I like but major storytelling flaws

I reconcile it by doing divergent AUs/rewrites of the worst shit/sticking my fingers in my ears and going "la la la what the fuck even is a Doylist viewpoint"/writing "my headcanon for how they actually justified this story decision" fic

SVU. Warren Leight doesn't seem to realize he isn't running Criminal Intent anymore, and as a result the last two seasons have been moving at a snail's pace. I'm still watching because I still love the characters, including some of his characters, although I'll never forgive him for trashing every beloved minor character he could get his hands on that he didn't help create.

Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and Dan DiDio.

Oh yes, the day will come when my generation of comic book readers is in charge, and they will retcon away all your retcons, just as you retconned away the universe I loved.

That day will come, and I will be there. AND YOU WILL RUE IT.

NOT GRACEFULLY.

Showrunner hate? Apart from cases where a new showrunner who was NOT the creator takes a show in a direction I hate (*cough* stevenmoffatwhostalkingaboutstevenmoffat *cough*), I can't hate a creator without hating the show too. I'm always too keenly aware that they are responsible for the great stuff I see before me. I think my experience in ATLA fandom inoculated me against showrunner-hate because the people screaming at Bryke for everything they wrote and saying they didn't understand their own show irritated me so much.

However, I do often have a love-hate relationship with many creators.

My feelings towards Joss Whedon are a strange blend of fangirly adoration and gratitude and gleeful amusement on one hand, and deep-seated disgust, contempt, moral outrage, persistent disrespect, offendedness, and resentment on the other.

My feelings towards Russel T. Davies are similar, albeit a good deal milder. Have grown more and more appreciative of his overall work, while at the same time despising his idiot bits more and more intensely, over the years.

J.K. Rowling is one of those people who I greatly adored but could openly lol at for certain things, yet also has some lapses and blind spots that make me want to bang my forehead against the pages and yell "DID XYZ NOT OCCUR TO YOU?????" until it echoes back in time to when she was originally writing it.

Aaron Sorkin is a god. I make no apologies for this opinion. Unfortunately, he also makes me want to put my fist through the screen, past his characters, reach into the hypothetical space behind the image on the screen where I imagine authorial intent lies, and slap him in his smug asswipe face, all without even having to hear him saying anything not filtered through the characters.

And then there's Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, who I'm convinced don't give a shit about their characters anymore.

Peter Lenkov. After this last season, I can't watch H5O because it no longer resembles the show I fell in love with. It's gone so far off the rails that I doubt I'll return to it.

Sera Gamble, Supernatural Seasons 6 and 7.

I don't hate Sera herself; she's a competent writer and I'm sure a very nice lady, but she had no business trying to run the show. The pacing was abysmal, her treatment of Castiel and the other angels blew chunks, continuity...well, WHAT continuity? :p I just was generally unimpressed. Jeremy Carver has done MUCH better since he took over, though I wouldn't say he's quite up to Kripke standards either.

As for reconciling the love and hate, I took the parts of those two seasons that I liked (and there was stuff to like in them, don't get me wrong; even a blind pig finds an acorn now and then, as they say, and the show still had some damn good writers on board) and did my best to rationalize or ignore the parts that sucked until things started to turn around in Season 8.

Huh, funny, I preferred Sera Gamble to Jeremy Carver. But then, I don't care for Castiel & the angels, so maybe that's the difference.

I really really miss the old SPN of "monster of the week" before they got so mired down in the messiness of ever-bigger ever-badder story arcs of angels-demons-heaven-hell-purgatory-blah. :-/

SA. And I miss the Sam & Dean who actually used to try to save innocent bystanders, instead of "whoops, you're possessed by a demon - it would be too much work to save you, so I will stab you with my demon-killing knife with no visible sign of remorse."
