Re: Happy Memorial Day (USA)

Memorial's Day always depresses me a bit. Mostly because it's the day where the news covers WWII vets and their stories. And each year how there are fewer and fewer of them. It's sad how those men and women are going from living and breathing people to stories told in past tense. In another generation, they will be all gone and I think it will be weird how the children of that generation, will see WWII as what my generation looked at the American Civil War or WWI. Not living, breathing stories but history that you read in books.

Why would the news do that on Memorial Day? It isn't Veterans Day. The local news where I live talks to vets but they tell the stories of people they served with who died in combat, not themselves.

They did that too. They told their stories which involved all the people who fought along side them and died. It's like remembering the dead through them.

I got to thinking of my grandpa today. This was pretty much his big holiday, and we'd all go over to his house for dinner. Those days are over now...

We went to the cemetery on the army base today and helped put flags on all the graves. There were some speeches before from people who served in Iraq and Afghanistan with some of the soldiers buried there. Afterwards, we all went to the park and we had a BBQ. It was a really cool day and it's the first time Memorial Day really meant something to me. I want to do that every year now.
