Re: Happy Memorial Day (USA)

So what exactly is memorial day for the US?

It's varied. For a long time it was just an excuse to have a picnic and for stores to have sales. It's considered the start of the summer season because most schools used to have their schedules based on Memorial Day and Labor Day (start the day after Labor Day, end the Friday before Memorial Day). Most schools don't do that anymore, but people tend to still think of it that way.

It's become more solemn for some families and even towns the last ten years. With more people dying in combat that most people oppose, there's more people viewing it as a day of remembrance than there had been in the last 40 years or so.

Still, the average person doesn't differentiate between Memorial Day and Veterans Day (which is missing the apostrophe by law). So if they do make any connection to the military on those days, they tend to get it wrong. On twitter and facebook and other social media sites, a lot of people post messages thanking vets on Memorial Day and then saying something about the fallen. It's kinda weird for me to see because I lived in London for a little while during Remembrance Day and it seemed absolutely everyone knew what it was and treated it solemnly, so coming back to the US and looking at the jovial ignorance of most people in our solemn observances was really jarring.
