I suspect the show was less "stare at another woman" than "Give the interloper the 'get the fuck out of dodge' glare until they leave"...since actually *saying* that would probably be a bit too rude.

Hahah yeah I realize. RE: Japanese relationship, while it's not entirely true that women can't be dominant, there's very little idea of mutuality, I find. In other words, if you want to be dominant, you have to find a man who wants to be submissive, and you'll be dominant all the time. Take the lead in the bedroom? Expect the dude to just lay there. Don't take the lead? He'll expect you just lay there. /from sordid experience

THAT SAID. It's changing. The most recent generation has very different ideas, and holy hell does it ever bother their parents and grandparents. "New" = "foreign" in most Japanese social paradigms, though I think many of these changes are wholly Japanese, "influenced by foreigners" is an easy smear/strawman to trot out when criticizing the younguns.

AYRT

Yeeeah, that's mostly what I've heard from a friend of the family. She seemed to think they were a good thing - but then again, she's also probably a little biased since she married an American and lived here for...10-20 years before they moved back to Japan.
