But you have to admit, there is a point where "your body, your choice" isn't always healthy like in cases of anorexia or bulimia.

Probably from the same place "anorexia and bulimia" came from: the brain as an example of an extreme that is unhealthy.

This is op: I'm neither anorexic, bulimic, nor do I weigh 600 pounds. I'm technically obese, but I'm fairly well proportioned and tall so people underestimate my weight. BI gained about 18 pounds this year because I was ill a lot and didn't move so much, and and hate the way it looks. Losing weight would in my way be detrimental to my health, on the contrary.

If that means harmful decisions, then that's their own decision and responsibility.

Not really. Those eating disorders are rooted in the brain's biochemistry that twists a person's self image.

But it still doesn't give anyone else the right to play parent to them, against their will.

It doesn't give anyone the right to force people to do things (setting aside conservatorships and whatnot), but everyone (speaking from a US perspective) has the right to speak up when they think somebody is doing a wrong thing.

I was just arguing that they can't force.

So in the end, it's still their body, their choice.
Their choice to do harm to themselves.
Their choice to ignore criticism for their decisions.

I have to agree with this. There's blurred lines when it comes to a person's capability to make an informed choice, of course, but I can't assume someone must not know what they're doing just because it's incredibly stupid and/or self-destructive.

Their no one else's legal responsibility, nor are they obligated to listen to them.

Starving yourself to death or becoming so fat you can't move under your own power are both pretty good indications somebody else should be in charge of your choices for a while.

Untreated eating disorders are fatal more often than not. If someone genuinely doesn't want help and has said so, then I agree people need to leave them alone the same as anyone else who makes an informed decision to refuse medical treatment for any illness. But if someone can't recognize that they have an eating disorder, then yes I think there is a medical responsibility to get that person to the point where they can make an informed decision about wanting or refusing treatment.

You seem to still think that eating disorders are choices. They aren't. People with eating disorders literally cannot physically see themselves as they truly are.

Do you mean it's there choice to get treatment or not? Or do you mean having an eating disorder is their choice? Because the eating disorder never goes away. It can be treated for a full lifetime, but if I'm anorexic, I will be until the day I die.

What? That is horrible thinking. If I had a friend and I saw him/her doing destructive things that might mean the death of him/her and I did nothing but say, "Well, it's their choice" that would make me a terrible friend.

You shouldn't stand idly by and watch someone throw their life away. Some people need help. Some people need to be told what they are doing is wrong and hurtful towards themselves. Especially, if you actually give a damn about them.
