Wii Fit and other health stuff

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you guys. I just plugged my Wii back in, got fresh batteries and hooked the Wii Fitboard back up. The first thing it told me was I haven't used it in 690 days. No wonder I put on 12 pounds since last time.

Not that I think Wii Fit, especially the beginner kung fu that I was doing, provides a great workout -- I think I read a long time ago that the best you can really hope for on advanced anything is the cardio equivalent of a brisk walk. But it's a fun measurement tool and good for inspiration when you're just trying to get back into the swing of being Not Sedentary. After 690 days. (To be fair, there was about a month and a half there in the middle where I biked 30 minutes 3-4 times a week, but I haven't done that in nearly a year.)

Also, I've been tracking food over at myfitnesspal. It astounds me the amount of salt that is in things.

LOL! I don't have a WiiFit, but I could use that reality check (cuz I think I'd be about the same).

Also, MyFitnessPal is great! Makes it almost easy to track all your food intake (and a bit scary, too).

SA

Oh, my god in heaven. I had forgotten the murder that Wii Fit skateboaring was on the calves. And I used to do Advanced! Here I did two rounds of Beginner, for a total of 6 minutes, and the lower half of my legs just want to fall off.

I've been adding what the game says the calories burned for X amount of time in a given game was to myfitnesspal, and I'd make this a strength exercise if there were an easy way to do it, but I'm not sure it's really quantifiable in that way.

Wii Fit was my first step in losing weight, and it helped me lose about 25 pounds (along with a better diet ofc). As long as you're doing the right things for a good amount of time, I would recommend it to anyone.

Good luck anon!

I'm disabled and the Wii Fit is pretty much the only exercise I can do (if I go out for a walk, there's a big chance I won't be able to make it back to the house). I've been doing it consistently since January and have now lost almost 15 pounds. It doesn't sound like a lot but this is weight I haven't been able to budge in YEARS and by consistently I mean 0-20 minutes a day of yoga and gentle balance exercises and the very occasional foray into skateboarding or one of the easier muscle activities. I do the body test every day because then I can see my pattern of weight gain and loss and don't become despondent over every gain - I can see now it will come back off.

I love the Wii Fit. It's made me feel like there's hope for me.
