The only unfortunate message I saw in that episode was "whining is awesome and effective!" For a show aimed at little kids, I don't think that was the best way to teach the real lesson they were going for.

...The real lesson should have been, 'Don't try to escape danger using your words rather than violence, wait for someone to save you!'?

Y'all realize the people Rarity was whining offensively at kidnapped her, right? They were the bad guys?

No, but I don't think the fact that she was only whining as an act to get out of danger came across very well? Also, if you're really in danger in real life, trying to get out of it by being clever and using your words is very risky and it usually is the safest bet to "wait for someone to save you."

But still, if they did want to show her using words to get herself out of that situation, there are plenty of ways to use words effectively without whining.

This is what bothered me about it as well.

Heaven forbid it, but a kid in such a dangerous situation, trying for the whining route because it worked for Rarity? Could get killed to shut them up.

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure there's an escape-from-a-dangerous-hostage-situation Cutie Mark Crusaders episode in the 4th season. It'll show kids the correct way to behave in that sort of situation.

If my kids ever get kidnapped by dog people and taken to some kind of diamond mine I will make sure they know to contact an adult.

I really don't think there's a kid show in the world that can prepare a kid for being fucking kidnapped.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But if there are burglars trying to break into our house, you better believe I'm holding Macaulay Culkin responsible for how my children respond.

(That was a Home Alone joke. In case it didn't come across.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think kids usually get the message as long as the message is clearly stated at some point. MLP does a pretty good job of wrapping it up; my 5-year-old got what he was supposed to get from it. When I asked what it was about, he said, "Her friends thought she couldn't take care of herself, but she could."

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
just goes to show how sometimes adults overthink things.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Aw. That's cute.

Wait, does that sound sarcastic? Because I mean it, she sounds sweet.

....side-eyeing you. if that's the only message you got from it, I have to wonder how carefully you were watching it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
what other messages were there?

that seemed like the big one

[personal profile] shinyhappypanic 2013-05-31 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
the fact that just because you're feminine does not mean that you're stupid and helpless (which is "the big one"), the fact that even in a scary situation, you should stay alert, the fact that using your brain can save your life....honestly if you missed all that and only noticed the use of whining (as a survival strategy ffs), I assume you aren't really into this show anyway

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I assume you aren't really into this show anyway

or you're waaaaay to invested.

lol. or I just paid enough attention to the piece of media we're discussing to distinguish themes. whatever!

also if you're the same anon who responded to my comment below in a particularly butthurt fashion, I have to add that that's actually pathetic. good night!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
anon you replied to

I hadn't really considered that (since all the main characters are female anyway and Rarity is willing to fight vov)

I think the whole "stay alert and use your brain" could have been used some other way, like having Rarity notice an object or something to use, rather than just... whining vov

I'm not sure how "into" the show I am. I think it's cute and I like the setting and characters but most episodes are sort of boring or mildly entertaining at best. I gave up a few episodes into season 3 but watched everything before that

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't whining, she was COMPLAINING.
Thiiis is whiiining:
