Re: Are "whites" in Europe and the US the same?

Oh, yeah, the Hispanic Caucasian thing is confusing to me. I definitely consider my neighbor from Spain white, but most people from South America aren't considered white where I am. Of course, most of them are mixed with the indigenous people of that area, so they aren't white, but I know there are white people in South America. Not sure what they would be considered if there were any in my area.

Said Hypothetical Person would be considered white, until people realize where Hypothetical Person is from, and then their minds will be blown as they try to reconcile reality with societal ideas that are crumbling more and more with each generation.

That's what I figured it would happen to me if I ever were to visit the US. (I have white skin, but are 100% Mexican, well, culturally. Ethnically I'm a mix of French ancestry with indigenous/Spanish blood)

NA I suddenly realise that by this reasoning our Queen is not white...

Why is that?

In the US, "Hispanic" is as much a linguistic/cultural grouping as it is a racial one.

No self-respecting Latin American would consider someone from Spain anything but white.

We're talking about white europeans, which clearly don't include Spanish people of black or middle-eastern background, but good attempt at trolling.

actually I'm a black spaniard who is fucking sick of seeing 'all spaniards are white' on here every fucking day. sure you mean light-skinned people, whatever, but it's fucking annoying to see it. we do exist and I'm just tired of seeing blanket statements that exclude us.

sa - I'm being oversensitive but I am tired of being treated like a tourist in my own culture and these stupid blanket statements on here just rub salt in that wound and piss me off

I'm sorry you felt offended. I did thought you were trolling. I assure you I'm aware of people of all sort of ethnic backgrounds from Spain, but the thread was specifically about light-skinned people (and the sub-thread, about light-skinned people from Spain). I didn't mean any harm by what I said.

For what is worth, race is a terribly complicated issue in Latin America. We deal with huge amounts of internalized racism, with lots of people wanting to be considered "white" if they can pass for it even if almost all of us have mixed ancestry with our respective originary indigenous people. Thus the blanket statement, which I reckon was a reckless thing to say - I should have been more specific.
