"Sponsored posts" on Tumblr

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
So, I see that we're all about loving Tumblr tonight, and in general I'm cool with Tumblr, but man was I not happy today. Did anyone else get this sponsored post shit showing up on their dash?

If you haven't - they sometimes stick in a sponsored post on your dashboard in between posts from people you follow. Like, earlier today I was just reading my dash, and saw a post about a show I've never seen anyone I follow post about. I looked back to see who posted it - and it was someone I don't follow. And then I saw the little dollar sign, and I was all, oh HELL no. Ugh ugh ugh, do not want ads being slipped in among the normal posts on my dashboard, all stealthy-like.

I got it, and apart from being initially confused as to why this person I don't know was on my dash, I didn't mind it. It's not that much different from someone posting to say "Hey, I watched this thing and it's awesome! Everyone should watch it!" except with the ads, Tumblr gets money for endorsements, and gets to remain free.

I did enjoy watching people flip their shit over that and the movement of the buttons, though.

Yeah, the only person I follow who posted about sponsored posts also thought they were fine. I'm starting to feel like I'm the irrational one here. And maybe I am. I just. Hate ads. Really really hate. And I especially hate that they're being snuck in on my dash masquerading as something I might actually care about.

I don't mind when people I follow post about and recommend awesome things they've watched - because they are people who I have chosen to follow because their tastes are similar to mine and so there's actually reason for me to believe I might be interested!

You're not the only one. Check out the "tumblr", "yahoo", or "ads" tags.

I was confused when I first ran across them, and although I don't like it I'll get over it. If every other post on the dash was an ad that would be intolerable, but right now I don't think its all that distracting. I can understand why they exist and will ignore them as best as I can.

Hopefully they won't increase in number though, and I understand why you don't want them there. (It would be neat if there was an option to turn them off, but that probably won't happen.)

I haven't seen them yet, but I've had them on the mobile app for a while and I just auto-scroll past anything with the dollar sign.
Hopefully I can just savior "sponsored" and never see them again.

I don't use tumblr, but I've seen Twitter do the same fucking thing. Which made me really glad that I use a client instead so I don't see them. But fuck, when I follow people, I do it because I'm interested in what they have to say - getting irrelevant shit popping up on a feed like that is just....argh. What's the point of having a follow list in the first place?!

So, you've got at least one person here who understands being annoyed at that shit :/

I haven't seen any; I think Tumblr Savior has an option to disable them.

Or maybe it's Adblock that's been nixing them?

I haven't seen them yet, huh.

The only things I was annoyed about was the update killing Savior and screwing up tags, but Savior has been updated and I got a new extension that fixes the tags, so.

I've had them come up on the Tumblr app on my phone for awhile now.

I find them really jarring. But in a way that's culturally interesting? I hadn't realised how rebellious, feministy, woman-centric, and enjoyably alternative a space my feed had become until there were suddenly these random obnoxious ads popping up. All by just reblogging shit I find cool instead of looking at things being pedalled at me.

Go away, ads. You are not my values!
