NBC Universal commissioned three seasons and Hannibal is guaranteed until then, despite ratings. If the ratings drop below a certain point (not sure what the exact mark is), then it will become a Hulu Exclusive. But there will be three seasons no matter what.

I'm on my phone but it was in at least one of the press releases about the show before it was aired, but I'm pretty sure I never saw that part mentioned until they'd cast all the Rolos.

I saw that! I have all the episodes DVRed but was waiting to see if it was renewed, so I'll have to watch them now.

I kind of have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, Hannibal is amazing and one of the best things on tv rn. The cinematography, the lighting, the sets, Hannibal's cookery, everything is so stylish and gorgeous. On the other hand, I'm scared of it losing momentum and tension and becoming just another procedural. In some ways, I was hoping for it to be a one or maybe two season wonder, with the storyline wrapped up beautifully; I don't want it to drag out.

I'm not sure how long they can keep up Will and Hannibal's close friendship without Will ending up looking like the thickest FBI consultant ever for not noticing the whole killing and eating people thing, but presumably they're going to have to hold off Will actually catching him until the end of the series, else we've got Red Dragon on our hands.
