Kind of an odd thing to be self-conscious about

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-31 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, hey, whatever helps you and whatever floats your boat and all. But I am curious, OP - why are you self-conscious/what is there to be self-conscious about? *iz confused*

I can understand it. You're standing there in public, doing nothing but waiting, where everyone passing by can just look at you and analyze all your flaws; it's much more exposed than if you were walking somewhere or actively engaged in some activity. When you're just... standing there, you can't help but feel like everyone who goes past is thinking, "Hey, look at that weirdo just standing there!" Even if you have a good reason, like you're waiting for the bus. Not to mention worrying about the classist assumptions that people might be making about you for taking the bus in the first place.

That kind of sounds...not that different from self-consciousness in general? I'm not seeing how it's less exposed than the other things, and as such why someone would be self-conscious about waiting for a bus (and isn't that basically doing something?) over just being self-conscious in general. The fear (?) of classist assumptions I can kinda get, but otherwise I think I'm still missing something.

Just standing there feels really conspicuous. If you're walking, you're going somewhere -- and it also reduces the amount of time any one person can stare at you and judge you. Movement is kind of a shield, psychologically. That, and you blend in with everyone else who is also moving. If you're just standing there like a lump, it makes you stand out more. It draws attention -- or at least, it feels like it does. There's also the fact that just standing there waiting doesn't occupy your mind as much, so you have more brain-space to worry about people staring at you and judging you.

Yeah, what the other anon said. I feel far less self-conscious when I'm out in public and actively doing something. (And no, standing and waiting isn't the same as doing something.) If I've got something to distract me, that helps. If I'm with someone, that helps, too. But being by myself feels really exposed for some reason. Rationally, I know that it's no big deal. That doesn't fix the problem, though.

I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it, but the whole point is that for some people, the anxiety isn't necessarily logical, so asking why is pretty squirm-inducing in itself. If you have to ask, then the explanation probably won't make much sense to you and I'm slightly envious that this is something that doesn't seem like a problem to you.
