Why, OP? Sure Nobita is better be separated from Giant and Suneo (all related to the almost-mutual jealousy towards each other), but you have to realise that they're just...kids. Them being jealous with each other is a perfectly childish, which they are. IMO, their relationships are pretty normal to me?

I'm curious. Anyone want to brief me on these characters and why they're bad for each other?

Nobita, the guy in glasses, is a good-for-nothing boy who is often bullied by Takeshi/Gian(the big guy). Suneo, the fox-faced boy, is a rich kid who is also Gian's main sidekick in bullying Nobita. To get back at them or evade their bullying, Nobita requests Doraemon the robot cat to provide him with futuristic gadgets for the purpose of protecting himself and/or raise his social reputation. Shizuka (the girl) is Nobita's love interest and the girl nearly all the boys in their neighbourhood wants to impress.

I never really thought that they would be /bad/ for each other but I'll try to guess: Suneo's cowardliness and continuing support of Gian validates Gian's destructive behaviour. Nobita's obsession with overpowering his bullies keeps him in a childish state of mind. Shizuka's unwillingness to listen to Nobita's perspective when he messes up with Doraemon's gadgets leads to an imbalanced relationship between them (This is significant, as the two are supposed to be married in the future and their son would bring Doraemon back to the past to help the kid Nobita).

Nonetheless, because this is an episodic kids show, character development is slow and the same tragic flaws and misunderstandings gets rehashed throughout the years.

Have you seen the Toyota commercials with Jean Reno as Doraemon?

This is probably the closest we will get to a Live Action Doraemon XDD But if I remember correctly these commercials exist in a different timeline than the original canon. By 30 years old, Nobita should have married Shizuka, their son should have been old enough to go back in time with Doraemon in order to prevent Nobita from becoming a colossal loser (iirc). Nobita being single in these commercials imply that Doraemon has failed his original mission :/

I wouldn't go as far as call it "fucked up", but I do think that if their relationship remained the same as they got older it would create fantastic grounds for some super emotional slash fic (Nobita/Gian, Gian/Suneo, Suneo/Nobita, or all three together).

What I wished the show could do without was the pervig on Shizuka.

I've never seen this but half the screencaps of this show I see are so fucked up out of context at least. One I saw had the main character kid holding a gun to his head and Doraemon saying "What's wrong? Pull the trigger."

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably the gun that gives you good luck (or extremely bad luck) when you shoot yourself with it. The show is about futuristic gadgets. Generations of Asian children grew up on this stuff and we're mostly alright.

Oh, I wasn't implying that any kid who watched the show would be fucked up at all! Just that some of the screencaps are really weird out of context.

There's just as much shit that's disturbing or disturbing out of context in the cartoons I grew up with, too. I didn't mean my comment to be a criticism of the show (which I want to watch) or people who watch it.

O.O I'm guessing the context is a)evil Doraemon or b)the gun is a gadget that would make Nobita smarter or something. Still, the image is pretty messed up.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's their sorta-futuristic gadget game of Russian Roullette, but instead of dying, you get a temporal bad luck.

And yeah, as the anon above me said, it's a staple classic of many Asian countries. Everyone and their grandmas know Doraemon; we grew up with the anime and the manga, and, well, we turn out okay in the end.

Hell, if you want more out-of-context fucked-up-ness, you should check out Crayon Shin-chan sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Shin-chan could be pretty fucked up in context XD I don't know why they marketed it to my 9YO ass but that shit was hilarious.

in its defense

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Guns are pretty strictly regulated in most Asian countries, especially back when this was first published. 99.99% of the kids who read/watched Doraemon back then probably never even saw a real gun, let alone try any experiment with it. Gun violence was something from far-removed from everyday life.

Re: in its defense

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-06-02 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I never tried to imply otherwise? Just that all I've seen from this show so far is out-of-context screencaps

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
But have you seen any of the movies (or read the long comic books) though? Any of them would be dead without each other.
