Second one. Think of it like 'stood in his way'--a path being the way someone is walking. I've never heard 'stood on his path' before, but it brings to mind standing on someone's piece of sidewalk or dirt road, something that belongs to the subject.

I see, that does help, thanks!

(That's why you can say "out of my way", because the opposite would be "in", but not "on", right?)

I've never thought of it like that, but possibly. It certainly seems to match up linguistically.

Almost certainly "in".

If you say "stood on his path", you mean that one character is standing on a path owned by another. If you want to say someone is blocking someone's way, it's "stood in his path".

I want to say the later, thanks!

Stood in.

It basically means to interrupt someone's progress/journey, right? So then it makes sense to say "stood in his way" rather than "stood on in his way".

Yes, that's what I'm trying to say. Thank you very much!

Goodness, you people are fast!

Context is important.

I stand on my path
"He stood on his path" 1 Person involved with his own path

I stand in his path
"He stood in his path" 2 people involved one obstructing the other.

Sorry...

If the sentence is about how "Paul stood on his (own) path"
If the sentence is about how "Paul stood in Davids path"

I think I'm probs overthinking it, just ignore me.

The second one! Don't worry, I appreciate the help.
