while both are snobbish/hipsterish, the first encourages others to read the books, or just books in general; the second just flaunts their old-fan-ness

i just don't see how, if you think that reading the books is in some way basically better than not having read them, you can get angry at the second sentiment.

The latter could just as easily apply to someone who's just starting to read the series? Medium snobbery is an entirely different argument than oldfen snobbery, even though both are still snobs.

It doesn't feel to me like flaunting anything. I agree with the general message of... "How is this a spoiler if this shit has been available for so many years?"
