question about obscure SNES game!
(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)There is this SNES game called Dark Law: Meaning of Death. It came out in Japan and was never localized, but someone did a translation of it and released the patch.
For one reason or another, I've never managed to play beyond the introduction section, and so this note the translator added makes me wonder wtf:
1.About Dark Law
----------------
Dark Law is a rather nontraditional RPG for the SNES. It focuses on
exploration and storytelling over combat; some of the skills that the
player's characters can learn are even useful for the adventure mode.
It is told through a series of short vignettes ("Scenarios.") Some are
interrelated, but most are essentially standalone. It is a very dark
and macabre game, probably not good to play if you're depressed, but it
does some very interesting things with the genre as a whole. It feels
like Dark Law was trying to be a pencil & paper game, but was coated with
a layer of J-RPG paint. It's quite good.
The bolded part. So, the only site I could find that described the plot was a (the?) Strategy Wiki, which focused more on, well, strategy, but did mention more or less what was going on with the plot, and well...
None of it struck me as particularly depressing? Like, some characters die, and so on, but isn't that standard JRPG fare? So, what is the deal with that warning?
Has anyone played this game? If so, could you tell me if there is anything particularly dark or depressing about it?
tl;dr is the SNES game Dark Law: Meaning of Death depressing or something??
