Does anyone use it? How does it work? What do you do? I've poked around and found some entertaining things, and considered signing up but it just looks really confusing...?

Well, you go on it, then you lose all hope in humanity. That's pretty much it.

I know, I know, it's against the laws of the internet. It still looks interesting, and I'm curious if anyone here actually likes it.

in order

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Almost Haphazardly. Just jump in if something looks interesting I guess. yes.

I can't say I'm too fond of them, what with all the skivvy subreddits they have/have had, but some parts of it are pretty all right, it seems. It all depends on the local moderators, it seems.

I use it and I like it. Just avoid the idiots. To make your experience easier get RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite). Find the subreddits you like and stick to them.

Yeah, it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Some subreddits are a festering butthole of misogyny and racism and so on, but there are just as many subreddits that are the opposite. You just have to find the good ones, and they're worth it.

I hate and fear it, personally. Stay away! Stay away!

I'm on Reddit.

Basically you find subreddits you like, submit links to stuff (if you want) or comment.

Buuuuut it can suck a lot. Some places are good though. And I got replied to from one of my all time heroes, Gillian Anderson, when she did an AMA. So it's good at times.

I use it (though I go through periods of "This is fun!" and "I hate every single person on this site, including myself. Especially myself.") and the experience... well, it's like Tumblr. It's what you make of it.

Reddit is made up of subreddits, which are boards devoted to one thing. There are the default subreddits, like /r/funny, /r/wtf, /r/aww, /r/atheism, /r/adviceanimals, etc. The first thing you'll want to do is unsubscribe from all of them. These are the largest subs, and aside from /r/aww, they are complete shitholes. They are made up of the worst people, the stereotypical "neckbeards." They are full of memes and nastiness, stuck-up snobs and hypocrites.

Now there are smaller subs, devoted to more niche audiences, like different fandoms and hobbies. These tend to be a lot better, with less of the negative aspects seen in some of the larger subs. Some that I like are /r/baking, /r/askculinary, /r/running, /r/makeupaddiction, and /r/writing. They're more focused and less... horrible.

What you want to do after unsubscribing from the defaults is to search for things that interest you and subscribe to some new subs.

It's pretty entertaining when you're bored and never had a problem with it unlike a lot of people. If you use your brain and not go to shitty subreddits infested with neckbeards then it can be interesting. I most go on /r/askhistorians, /r/foodhacks, /r/thrifstorehauls and /r/makeupaddiction. /r/nosleep if I'm super bored.

Yeah, the history subreddits are surprisingly interesting and chock full of learned individuals who actually study history and can provide secondary and primary sources and generally know what they're talking about. I actually learned things there.

I do a bit

Mostly for funny pictures on the front page.

The problem is that it's more or less set up to be a giant groupthink circlejerk. You get karma points, and people actually care about it.

AMAs can be interesting, though. Small fandom subreddits tend to be far, far less gross than the big sections.

To be fair, doesn't that describe tumblr and most of these sorts of sites?

It seems really simple to me - it's a collection of discussion boards that let you order content by how the community reacted to it - either posts/links or same-level comments.
I'm trying to sign up to see what the fuss is about and I'm sitting here going "What am I interested in?? Am I interested in anything???"
