People need to literally stop...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
...using the word "literally" all the damn time. I'd never really understood what it was like to have a word ruined for me before, but now I get it. Holy mother of fuck, do I get it. None of the Tumblr morons who throw it around like word confetti seem to understand what it actually means. It has a specific meaning, you fucks, it's not supposed to just emphasize whatever you're talking about. STOP.

When I was in middle school, I remember this one grammar book that devoted an entire page to what the word "literally" actually meant, even going so far as to include a little skit on the proper and improper uses of it in conversation. At the time I was baffled by the weirdly annoyed tone it seemed to have, since I almost never heard people use that word. Now, I am convinced that that grammar book was written sometime this year and fell through a time vortex or something.

Is anybody else as annoyed by this phenomenon as I am? Are there words that make you want to slap somebody every time you see them misused?

I just wrote up a huge rant about this then deleted it!

I don't even care if people are using it correctly at this point, I just want it to stop. I used to really love the word (used correctly) but no. Just no. For the love of all that is holy please stop.

I've literally just thought about how I literally can't stop using literally. It sucks.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
But does it literally suck? Because that could be convenient in the right circumstances.

I wish. Then I could pimp out my literally problem and make some literal money.

The word looks weirder and weirder the more you repeat it.

'Tumblr morons'? People have been misusing the word left and right long before Tumblr even existed. If you haven't encountered it before now, you've just been lucky.

I fucking hate that, too!

I also hate people mixing up various homonyms (they're/their/there, your/you're, to/too/two, it's/its, pallet/palette/palate, etc...) and saying "could care less" instead of "couldn't care less." And "irregardless," though I don't see that around so much anymore.

I'm sorry! I try really hard but I still mix up the theres/theirs. I don't even know why, I just keep mixxing it up and I don't always notice ;-;

I kind of like 'could care less.' It seems deliciously snarky.

'I could care less. If I practised meditation a bit more often, or took a shitload of mushrooms, or if there was a zombie apocalypse going on, or if Darth Vader had the Death Star pointed at my front garden, I think I could actually manage to care even less than I do now. But it would be pretty damn hard.'

"societal." After a lot of argument and dictionary-consulting I am finally convinced it is in fact a real word, but it is not one I will ever get behind. I have never heard a sentence containing this word that didn't make me want to put my fist through a wall. Unfortunately it's the trend word of the moment among liberal arts undergrads.

I think it's more important to get your point across than perfectly use words with their technical meaning. "Literally" has been used hyperbolically for so long that I honestly don't care if it's been used in a proper techinal manner.

Ugh. THIS. It used to be such a fun word when used correctly but now it just makes me want to scream at least 90% of the time because it's being used incorrectly.

There are enough other words to emphasize things. There's no need to mutilate "literally". :/

Take a chill pill dude(s). Obviously I would frown upon people missusing 'literally' in a formal document/discussion, but colloquially? bah.

You'll pry the misuse of the word literally from my cold dead hands.

I literally can't stop using the word "literally" and I literally feel like an idiot every time I read one of my posts and realize that it's literally sprinkled with about 8 unnecessary uses of the word.

i purposely use it incorrectly sometimes as a joke. not making fun of people who don't know how to use it, just adding ridiculous emphasis in such a way that makes it obvious. i think a lot of people are in the same boat here, honestly. i haven't met a whole lot of people who don't actually know how to use it properly.

I tend to substitute it with "figuratively", that usually gets a laugh

I imagine people used to feel the same way about the word "really".

Semantic shift happens. Deal with it. *sunglasses*
