I'm basically rewriting 50 Shades of Grey with mine and my partner's OCs, and it's supposed to just be a fun parody of that godawful book, and yet I'm actually doing more research into the first goddamn chapter than I think E.L. James did in the whole fucking series.

I think I'm doing "parody" and "just for fun" wrong, but goddamn does it annoy me that she couldn't even bother to look at a map to realize that Portland, Oregon, is south of Vancouver, Washington, and therefore in the complete opposite direction that she needs to go in to get to Seattle. WTF?! GoogleMap that shit!

I know the feeling. I've put so much research into things that may get one line in the fanfic stories I'm writing. XD

I know, right? Esp. since I write a lot of Sherlock fic, and I know there are a lot of cultural, legal, etc. differences between the UK and the US (God, the differences between the school systems alone... O_O ), so I do research to make sure I don't look like a dipshit.

Wait. She didn't know Portland was south of Vancouver? Anyone with basic knowledge of US geography should know that.

She's from the UK. What boggles me more is that the detail itself could've very easily been left out - she specifically added an illogical detail that mostly just makes Ana look like a complete fucking numbskull.

Actually, what really boggles me is why she didn't just set the damn book in London. There are so many Britishism and lack of knowledge of US laws (versus UK laws) that it's just so sloppy. I'm all for writing about places you've never been to, but my god, do your research!

I'm assuming it has to do with the fact that 50 Shades is Twilight AU fanfic with the serial numbers filed off. Twilight was set in Washington state, so that's where she set hers, I'm assuming. Then when she scrubbed it for publication, she didn't want to go to the trouble of re-localizing it.

Or, y'know, editing it. Like, at all. The sentence structure in this is atrocious at best. Uhg.

This is the only thing I've ever hate-read. And I'm doing it so I can write gay porn. Woo. Go me.
