Weird research for fanfiction/stories

Inspired by a comment above: what strange topics have you researched for writing?

How to effectively dose someone with arsenic.
The treatment of bastards in French nobility.
Mesmer's theory of magnetics.
Uhmm and the climate of Georgia.
Those are the ones I can think of right now.

Are metes and bounds considered weird/strange? Because I'm research metes and bounds for a fic of the same name.

You just actually reminded me that I wanted to look into different ways to do fortune telling. Thanks!

The weirdest was probably traumatic amputation and the resulting prosthetics available.

Lmao. The Mr. Mime at the end stayed me.

What were your fics about?

Tw mentions of noncon

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I never actually wrote the Mr. Mime one. It was going to be about Ash's Mom's Mr. Mime getting tired of being her sex slave and running away only to be captured by Team Rocket (Butch and Cassidy) and being forced into sexual slavery in a Pokemon brothel.

The horse research was for a story about Rainbow Brite's Starlite in a non-con scenario.

I tried to look up the effect seasonal changes have under the oceans/seas for a fic, but all I found was something I think is some kind of mobile phone game, and global warming. so I just scrapped what I was going to write, fortunately a very small part, and wrote something else.

A video game: OFF

It's just a bunch of theories about the backstory of two characters and I'm probably going waaaaaay overboard, but it's super fun so whatever.

Oh gosh. I wrote a slash watersports fic, yeah? Only thing is I'd never been a man back then (I'm bi) so I had to do a lot of research. I went to this community on LJ (gay_sex_tips_ and posted a list of questions about everything involving erections and urination. I wanted to make it as realistic as possible, see, so I really went all out. The awesome thing, however, is that the men on the site were accommodating!

If anyone is interested, here are some of the questions I posted:

1) Are men able to urinate when hard (I'm thinking 'yes', but...)? Will they lose their erection after urination?
2) Can a man become erect during urination, or directly afterward?
3) While urinating, if a man pressed down on his urethra (i.e., with finger), will that be able to impact the flow in any way (aside from pressure)?
4) Can men ejaculate instantly (or a few moments after, anyway) urinating, and vice versa?
5) Scenario: a man has to piss pretty badly, but can't, so he's holding it in. Somehow, a short time later, he gets aroused (for whatever reason). What would happen, then? Would he be able to get hard even having to pee? I understand that males have this sort of "bladder-block" that close off the passageway from the bladder to the urethra when they're aroused, but what happens when they had to go to the bathroom before they became aroused?
6) Does ejaculating and pissing feel similar? (Obviously 'coming' will be more pleasurable, but I mean more in terms of pressure and shooting and so and so). Is it possible to feel like you're going to pee when you come (or vice versa).
7) Alright, this question is a bit... vivid, and admittedly, weird, but I hope you can answer it anyways. Scenario: say you're pissing and someone is stroking your penis. How do you reckon that would feel, exactly? I don't have one myself so I really don't know what to expect. Would that make the urge to piss stronger, or increase the amount of piss/flow of piss? Could that possibly hurt?

What are the answers, anon?

Now I'm curious, especially because you didn't post any of them.

Lightning injuries.
Short-term cryogenic preservation.
Untreated tuberculosis.
Effects of working with cobalt powder.
Underground civilizations.
How to burn someone by pouring super glue on their shirt.
Major surgery with minimal anesthesia.
Electroshock weaponry/Tesla coils/laser-guided lightning.
MK-ULTRA.
Blood substitutes.

Aaaaand a bunch of other shit. The topic of the moment seems to be Tor Browser/internet hitmen/deep web riffraff in general. And I'm always reading up on diseases, implanted medical devices, anything involving dead people, and crazy tinhat beliefs. Because that stuff comes in handy once in a while. And is just interesting.

...Honestly, I tend to just stick things I've already been researching for years in to stuff I write. It's a lot of why I make shit up in the first place!

I once spent a night googling underwear, in order to properly describe what a character was wearing.

A recent one was how well poppies can be grown in the UK. And how easy it would be to harvest poppy latex to make opium in a zombie apocalypse.

Mainly stuff like the names of plants, what their effects are and where they might grow. Nothing too weird, really.

What specific buildings and/or bars look like inside so that my five-line scene in a fic will be 100PERCENT accurate for the random 2 people who have ever been inside that building/bar.
Where atmosphere becomes space (i.e. - how far up and what it looks like).
