it's not really a good reason for people to be pretentious asshats either, though

encouragement is good, but i also see so many people act superior and condescending about the whole issue, which seems backwards to me: if you want more people to read, it's probably a good idea to not look down on people who simply haven't or don't want to

and so many methods of "READ A FUCKING BOOK!!" seem more like they would make people feel ashamed or feel bad about themselves, because feeling judged is hardly something that inspires people

All things I totally agree with, anon. I never meant my comment to come off as judgemental for nor reading, but to point out to the commenter who stated of the debate with heads in asses that, yes, there are good reasons for reading beyond enjoyment and that's why it's on a pedestal. So if it came off that way, my bad.
