OP. I got called all kinds of funny things because of my last name. It is very uncommon though I don't think it all that difficult to pronounce (of course everyoneeee pronounces it wrong the first time). My teachers and such would make silly jokes about it. Did I think they were being racist/mysoginst/hateful? Not really. I just think they saw my goofy name and thought it was sort of funny.

Is your last name ethnic? Or is it like Cumberbatch, a strange-sounding English family name? I've explained below how the issue isn't really the same thing because of the differing motivations behind the mockery. That's why one is considered racially-driven humor, and the other isn't.

My last name is Jewish and people used to pronounce it as "Napkin", because it was similar. Is that racist?

Not anon you are referring to. Obviously not because you are white. DUH!!!

Unless you are not white...then yes.

I'm not you so I hesitate to presume, but if you re-examine some of the instances where people did that, you may find their humor had a racist edge to it. Especially if they are from outside the culture. It has been true of certain Jewish people I know, and of my own (non-Jewish) ethnic name.

Wow, that's pretty racist right there. Cumberbatch is an ethnic name. An English ethnic name. All names are ethnic, that is, it can be traced to a certain culture. But in your racist mind, English doesn't count as an ethnic group.

Oh, cute, another person who thinks that there certain "safe" ethnic groups that is okay to make fun of. Go fuck off.
