Depends entirely on context. If it's accompanied by other material referencing his background, it's racist. If not, it's the same ribbing every long-named celebrity gets.

I think it's a dumb joke, but not necessarily racist. I'd suggest picking something other than "ding dong" though, as that's often used as a part of racist jokes against Asians. I understand the comparison to the song, but there are a lot of other ways you can play with the name.

Treating every celebrity of color as a potential victim of fan oppression seems like a really shitty way to go about combating racism. "This person is brown; I'd better treat them differently!" is going to lead to bad places.

Aside: It's downright hilarious that we're all defending the Grand Dragon of Racebending, but whatever.

Again, depends on context. I'd have to see how else they were posting it. It does matter that Shyamalan is a highly successful public figure, but people do write racist things about highly successful public figures.

Probably non racist example: "Hey, what new horrible shit is Shamalamadingdong doing now? I loved Signs but I can't forgive him for Avatar. And now I find out he's behind that After Earth movie? Dammit! What else is he making that isn't labeled?"

I said (talking about after earth "I wonder what happened to Shamalamadingdong's career? "

Yeah. I'm facepalming hard because I don't even like the guy's movies, but still think this is racist as fuck.

I'm talking here about just the word "shamalamadingdong." The poster himself might have been saying some serious racist shit. I just don't think I can judge a word outside its context. Blame a solid humanities education.

I love the way you think, Chardmonster, and am impressed with your reasoning here.

Aw. Thanks.

why do you think labeling something as racist automatically means people think the celebrity in question (and brown people everywhere) is suddenly being treated like a victim?

it usually just means that people think someone has said something offensive that they should not have said, since it goes well beyond the single man.

especially when the OP in question immediately came running here for validation, solely because being called a racist pissed them off.

You're right. I'm talking in the context of fan websites/places like tumblr where that's usually the case (working off the tone and mood of posts). I'm sure as hell not talking about cultural criticism as a whole.
