Re: Cultural differences - privacy

We still don't talk to people on long journeys if we can avoid it. The only conversations I've had with people I don't know in public are usually either with drunks, or people who come off as in need of treatment.

It's a pretty interesting thing once you realize it, isn't it? I've never gone looking for anything like that, but I'm sure I could find all kinds of information about people I would never talk to (or want to talk to).

I am pretty open and friendly so I talk to people all the time (I get great service at the local bus and in the local grocery store and my coffe shop), but usually elderly ladies, because they are always happy to talk to people.

I have had nice conversations with people my own age on the 6 hour train journey home, but that is mostly because I travel with my cat and she usually gets to come out of her cage on a leash, and people find that amusing.

Yeah, I wonder how other cultures would react if their tax report thing was accessible to every citizen online?

Even open people seem not to get the best service around here. We're not nearly as service-minded as I'd like, honestly.

If you travel with a cat like that you're my exception heh (although I am probably still going to be cooing over it from afar, I will be obvious about it in some vague attempt at making you talk to me so that I can talk to your cat).

Some would shudder in utter horror, I'm sure. Interestingly, I'm just not bothered by the thought.

I guess it depends, I am not open with my shop people to the degree that they know my name, I am open in the way that I smile say hello and aks where stuff is or when they will get new stuff in. And sometimes we talk about the weather...

Yeah, (I would probably smile at you, but if you are too far away then I would not say Hi, because that would be too intrusive)

I don't care, people are more than welcome to find out how poor I am!

Even that won't get you decent service around here half the time, but yeah, I do tend to do that too (I've had jobs with costumer interaction before and remember how terrible it could be, so I'm always trying to be nice out of some sense of 'let's not make their day worse')

Pretty much my thinking too!

Yeah, I think it depends on where you live, right now I live in a tiny city (which makes the people a bit more open and welcoming than in the bigger cities), but when i lived in a much city I behaved the same, but the shop people did not remember me (or care) so that is a factor.
