Doyle's books were serialized chapters in magazines, so there are inconsistencies even within the same book. Where we see all the guns lining every wall since, he was mostly writing something he didn't want to continue for the sake of a paycheck.

True. But the inconsistencies were more between books, rather than within them, and had more to do with characterization.

Only the novels. The short stories (the vast majority of his Holmes output) were published as standalones. You only got the "I don't want to do this" after the first two novels and two sets of shorts.
