I was gonna write up an actual response to this, but then I thought better of it. Hell, if it weren't for the Teen Wolf pic, this secret could've been from 1999.

Yup, I've heard lots of wank about Gundam Wing's misogynistic fandom before checking out the series recently (it's a 1995 anime). I was pleasantly surprised to find a staggering number of empowered female characters and wondered how the fandom's misogyny got so notorious.

As a former GW fandom member, I can tell you that it was really, really WEIRD to transition from a show where I liked the female characters to a fandom that relied on the "SHE'S HORRIBLE AND EVIL GET RID OF HER SO OUR BOYS CAN HAVE THEIR LOOOOOOOVE" formula. I have no idea what brought that shit on; even with Supernatural's notorious lady-hatin', most of the fic tends to just... pretend the women aren't there, or write around them in some manner, but I've only rarely come across some that legitimately treated the female characters like shit. The Relena-bashing in GW, though, was epic and nigh unavoidable.

Ah, yes, I'm familiar with GW -- I watched it when it first aired (by way of ridiculously over-priced VHS fansubs), and took part in the fandom. The women in the series were indeed amazing, but they sometimes got twisted in fanfics. I say "sometimes" because it was never the majority that did this, but rather the BNFs. Perhaps that's why it sticks out so much, in terms of notoriety.

Amusingly enough, it was mainly Relena who got turned into an evil harpy. Sally, on the other hand, seemed to be loved by all and was often paired up with Wufei. This, I think, was because the Heero/Duo fans faaaaaar outweighed the Treize/Wufei fans.

I have a theory that if Relena is shown to be interacting with the other four pilots on a regular basis, the batshit fans could be kinder to her and simply use her character as a Mary Sue avatar in pairings with the pilots.

In other large animanga fandoms (I'm thinking of Naruto and Yugioh), while lady-bashing exists, the prominent female characters are more often used as OOC stand-ins for fangirls.

Yeah, definitely. Treize/Wufei kind of fell into a fandom niche that some people genuinely liked, but Wufei was always kind of a spare, so most people seemed a lot more uninvested in what relationships he was written into.

That's a really good point about the BNF's, too. I would occasionally see Relena turned into an evil gay-hating she-devil while sifting through, but like you and the other anon have said, she was almost always a non-issue outside of the Big Name pieces.

Ironically, I came to enjoy seeing her paired with Dorothy as another kind of "pair the spares" sort of thing, at first to get her out of the way of the narrative, but then it really grew on me.

I also seem to remember seeing this weird subset of Lady Une/Trowa shipping in surprisingly decent number. Never really saw any wank about that, though, even despite all the 3x4 love. Guess the main wank really was just about Relena.
