YES! Forget about the fact that they could have avoided the mess if they had done that. How about they should have done it because IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER STORY to begin with? If you are going to reboot Star Trek, don't drag out its greatest hits. Do a new take with new villains to make it, its own creature. If I want to watch Wrath of Khan, I'll go watch Wrath of Khan. C'mon, Abrams, you have over a hundred million dollar budget, a willing cast and all the best special effects in the world to work with and this is the story you give us? Really?

Exactly. After the first movie they could have gone to a completely different direction, since there was no reason to follow the original time line at all.

This is also the same issue that I have with the current Star Trek comics. They are leaning heavily on the episodes of the original series plotwise, and I hope that they'd forget them altogether.
